January | 2015 | Afoot
https://theholcks.wordpress.com/2015/01
JANUARY, 2015 SUMMARY. Monthly/yearly mileage: 100 on the dot. Recall that one of my goals was to have at least 6 100 mile months this year. It’s good to have one done. It was close because, despite the best of intentions I didn’t run in Lansing while there last weekend. It’s just too hard to pull away from the grandkids and there was a lot of ice build up on the streets. January 31, 2015. Here are a few pictures from my runs this week. We’re staying outside of downtown, out by the big city par...And we ...
What Zagreb Has. | Afoot
https://theholcks.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/what-zagreb-has
I’m back in Zagreb for the winter break, and it is truly a winter break. No running in t-shirts here yet. It’s been freezing and gray; in other words, typical. I have been spoiled by the previous week of sun and high 50s in Istanbul. Here are a few pictures from my runs this week. We’re staying outside of downtown, out by the big city part, Maksimir, where I took my first run in in the early, sleeting morning through muddy trails. Quite a different feel from the previous day’s run. Miles this year: 62.
Winter Blues | Afoot
https://theholcks.wordpress.com/2015/03/16/winter-blues
2015 has has been dishing it out left and right. I just got back from a vicious two mile run. Or, shall I say, slog. Two miles. Slog. What is wrong with this year? Is it just me? Is my apartment killing me or has my internal monologue gone sour? Or have I fashioned myself Job of my running world for some weird psychological reason unknown to my conscious self? What’s going on here…? For almost a full week following. Which brings me to March! It’s been a rocky road, 2015 has. But I’m still on it. The weat...

1 I’m so glad you finally posted, because I love those winter running pictures. It makes me feel nostalgic for Wisconsin and happy I live in a warmer climate all at the same time. 2 I signed up for a half-marathon in Antalya in March, and on on the island of Bozcaada, near Çannakale in May. Might try to throw a couple little guys in. It’s nice to have something to move toward. 4 Running humor below. Too true…it’s very small so click here. To see it full size. I especially love the second to last one.

A Treat for You. December 30, 2014. Right now it is gray and rainy, but warm. The sun was still out this morning, when I traveled out to Belgrade forest for my Sunday run. December 21, 2014. As it turned out, I was not the only one out there giddy with vitamin D. Enjoy. December 19, 2014. 2015 Summary – 2016 Goals. ALLOW ME TO RANT. A Tale of Two Races. WE HAVE BEEN REMISS. Not only does living in Zagreb allow for many travel options, its close proximity to other countries also makes spontaneous road trips to, say, Italy, possible. Sister: You do realize how lucky you are with all these vacays, right? Have you ever tried to count how many vacations you have a year? I know, Aim, super grateful! After the earthquake, this church was damaged, but left standing, its Gothic arches a reminder of the event that destroyed so much of the city. So, to the caves we went. There are two major cave sites to choose from: Postojna and Škocjan, both in the southwest Karst region of Slovenia, about a 2-hour drive from Zagreb. We chose the Škocjan Caves this time around, but certainly plan on checking both off my Slovenia list before long. September 24, 2014.

Experiencing Portugal’s culture, people, architecture, and historical wonders has to be a highlight of my time so far in Europe. The colors here just blew me away. This castle is said to be the inspiration of the famous Disney castle. The royal kitchen….amazing! Heading inland from Lisbon, away from the coast, lies Evora. Evora’s main square: Praca do Giraldo. This temple was part of the Roman forum and main square, waaay back in the first century. Wow.

Perfectly Day by Day. Daily musings of a Northwest girl abroad. Perfectly Day by Day. Day by Day in the DR. If I Were to Make a New Year’s Resolution. Everyone in the blogosphere seems to be talking about New Year’s Resolutions this month (naturally). I like the idea of a fresh year, a fresh start, but I have never really made a resolution on January 1 in any official capacity (by official, I mean just labeling it for myself as a NYR). However, I recently read an article. All jumbled up with. Should is a...

Afoot | dad and daughter take to the open road!
My first half marathon! I am home and showered and about to embark on an epic Sunday nap. Today’s run was great! This city. The secrets never end. We started in Yenikapi, one gigantic enthusiastic herd rolling down the highway waving to construction workers hanging out of machinery windows filming us on their cell phones. Very soon, we left the construction behind and to the left, the ancient city walls rose up from overgrown grassy banks, while the Sea of Marmara stretched out on the right. My goal was ...
