John Harrold was born in Glasgow and studied drawing and painting at the Glasgow School of Art. He worked on Rupert Bear for the Daily Express for well over 30 years and was its official Rupert artist, producing stories for the daily strip in the Express as well as the covers, endpapers and contents of the Rupert Annual.
