Rantings and photos of Metro Detroit in a post-industrial era. Archive for the 'Michigan' Category. July 18th, 2012. March 28th, 2011. March 5th, 2011. I recently read this article. In the ChronicleHerald, about the plight of the homeless in New Orleans. From the sounds of it, the problem of homelessness and abandonment in New Orleans is at least as bad as it is in Detroit. And once more, I’ve come across an article. February 11th, 2011. How long has manufacturing been in decline? A long time, and a lot.

Rantings and photos of Metro Detroit in a post-industrial era. At last count Detroit had over 12,000 abandoned houses scheduled to be torn down. The houses range from small nondescript bungalows to, formerly, stately mansions. Small churches, often in re-purposed buildings, including old storefronts, houses, or other buildings not initially intended to be used as a place of worship. A variety of, mostly industrial, doors in Detroit. Photos made on December 26, 2007; a foggy morning in Detroit.

Rantings and photos of Metro Detroit in a post-industrial era. Archive for the 'religion' Category. Updated map of Detroit photo locations. August 29th, 2013. I’ve added some small church locations to my Google Map. Unfortunately, the Huggins Community African Methodist Episcopal Church. And the whole row has since burned. In a larger map. Thursday, January 16, 2014. This building was most recently the Christian Harmony Full Gospel Church, years ago I think it was the Lighthouse Restaurant or something like that but now it's an abandoned building on 6 Mile (McNichols) and Woodbine, 1 block west of Telegraph in Detroit, MI 48219. Shipwrecks of the world. Havent posted shipwrecks until now, for the main reason that people are pretty aware of their existence. They always fascinated me though, whats better than a huge steel machinery, left to rust and disintegrate at the hands of nature? Also fascinating is the fact that many shipwrecks even redefined history, cultures and media (the Titanic for example). More decay please . Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Old abandoned cars in decay. Chicago Urbanist: Driving and the Generation Gap
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2012/07/driving-and-generation-gap.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Wednesday, July 25, 2012. Driving and the Generation Gap. It is no secret that there is a a decline in driving. In America. From December 2011:. Americans have been driving fewer miles every month since March, a decline fueled by factors ranging from the weak economy to high gas prices to aging boomers and teens driving less. Is this decline a long term trend or a short term aberration? While some pundits make the case. We can also challenge the idea that aging ...
Chicago Urbanist: July 2014
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Monday, July 14, 2014. Following the housing problem. I previously covered the housing crunch facing big cities. The problem is starting to become widespread. Indeed we are already seeing it now. Younger adults are buying homes infrequently. Just 36% of Americans under the age of 35 own a home, according to the Census Bureau. That's down from 42% in 2007 and the lowest level since 1982, when the agency began tracking homeownership by age. We see younger adults w...
Chicago Urbanist: The suburban partnership
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-suburban-partnership.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Wednesday, April 16, 2014. For several years, some aldermen in Chicago have bloviated about imposing a commuter tax on suburbanites who work in the city. You can see its roots in 2011. When it was proposed by city Inspector General Joseph Ferguson and praised by several aldermen and opposed by the mayor. It was ressurected in 2013. With support from alderman Bob Fioretti. And this acrimony has played itself out in public policy. Look at how little cooperatio...
Chicago Urbanist: Chicago's construction crisis
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2013/08/chicagos-construction-crisis.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Friday, August 9, 2013. Well, perhaps the word crisis is too strong? But still, Chicago isn't building enough new buildings fast enough. Oh sure, there are new buildings going up. But not enough. Just check out this graph of construction [via Matt Yglesias. Growth in Chicago’s startup community has led to a very tight market for appropriate office space, particularly in the River North neighborhood, according to a new report by CBRE. For the past few years the W...
Chicago Urbanist: The Downtown living era
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2014/09/the-downtown-living-era.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. The Downtown living era. The latest news comes from Cleveland. Downtown development is taking off. And people are flocking to the center of Cleveland, a city once derided as the "mistake on the Lake". Detroit, despite bankruptcy and depopulation in the periphery, is seeing a replete core. The same old story in Milwaukee, where the downtown core is booming. I have long covered Chicago's Loop development. As you can see from this map th...
Chicago Urbanist: Chicago and Detroit: comparing interurban rail
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2011/09/chicago-and-detroit-comparing.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Thursday, September 22, 2011. Chicago and Detroit: comparing interurban rail. Recently metropolitan Detroit proposed a plan. To create an interurban rail system in the region. The two proposed lines would essentially restore routes that closed in the mid-80s. This plan. In size. Chicago had experienced similarly meteoric growth, expanding by 54%. In Chicago the interurban lines fell on hard times and the metropolitan region created the Metra. In Detroit the inte...
Chicago Urbanist: The shifting tides of Chicago transit
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-shifting-tides-of-chicago-transit.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Wednesday, February 12, 2014. The shifting tides of Chicago transit. The Chicago Transit Authority's ridership numbers came out a few weeks ago, and the numbers look good on first glance. Stepping back and looking at the RTA's numbers. This presents a real puzzle. Does the decline of bus ridership and rise of rail ridership reflect a changing taste in RTA patrons? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The shifting tides of Chicago transit. Chicago Urbanist: Demographic Changes
http://chicagourbanist.blogspot.com/2011/10/demographic-changes.html
Examining Chicagoland one brick at a time. Monday, October 17, 2011. One story about the demographic changes in Chicago that I find underrepresented is the increase in downtown population. Historically, downtown Chicago's population was described as being like a volcano: empty in the middle and surrounded by great heights, then gradually decreasing to a shallow exterior. This is changing. Via the New York Times. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). More on the wrecking ball. Chicagos subways back in time.

Siempre buscando innovar, siempre buscando ofrecer.
