On Wednesday I discovered this charming bullfrog hiding under the creek bank where I was eating lunch between classes. He was roaring so loudly that the water rippled around his throat. My gorgeous basil plant, one of the joys of this summer, turned into pesto yesterday. I cut off about half of it to use for pesto, and I must confess that it sort of felt like committing murder. Now Playing: Bach, Sonata for flute in E Major, "Adagio ma non tanto.". Clover has taken to carrying my boots and Scott's house slippers around the house. The process is somewhat disturbing: one at first hears the thunk-thunk-thunk as she hauls them up the basement stairs and then her baby-like whining as she proceeds through the kitchen, across the dining room, and up the next flight of stairs. I just finished Eric Metaxas's new biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. I have to say that from the title (with its all-too-obvious echo of John Le Carre's novel) to the writing style itself, I found the biography to be somewhat long-winded. Lately in The Brothers Karamazov. One of the brothers has been accused of murdering their father. His interrogation by the local authorities takes chapters and chapters, but buried in the paragraphs of dialogue are revealing gems about this particular brother's character, and how Dostoyevsky understands him in context of the story. My gut tells me I know economics. How should Republicans respond to King v Burwell? The Judo solution for the ACA. Any time now the Supreme Court will rule on the legality of Affordable Care Act subsidies through federal health insurance marketplaces. A ruling for the administration means we keep the status quo (barring some weird saving construction), so there is nothing for Republicans to respond to. But what should they do if the court rules for the plaintiffs, and 37 states lose their ACA subsidies?
