In my heart that has been hurting for so long. I claimed victory perhaps prematurely. Like ol’ George W. on the deck of that aircraft carrier. Or in that famous picture of Dewey beating Truman. My friend sat on a ledge, smoking a cigarette, listening intently. I let all of the thoughts, the fears, the hopes, all of it pour out of me. It felt good to have that release, to say things out loud that had been stuck inside. I admitted to my friend my mistakes, how I clung and strangled near the end. My friend reminded me of other areas where I failed.

The children are asleep in their beds. The animals nestled in next to the children. I sit at my second-hand dining room table. Typing on my six-year-old laptop. It is not always to create art.
