The Shrieking Violet: The Star and Garter: secret history of a nightclub

http://theshriekingviolets.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-star-and-garter-secret-history-of.html

Sunday, 13 April 2014. The Star and Garter: secret history of a nightclub. In the bleak and unprepossessing red light district behind Piccadilly Station. I spent the rest of the evening talking to strangers, engaging in what I probably thought at the time were deep conversations about things like the influence of Albert Camus' The Outsider. On 'Killing an Arab' by the Cure. At the Star and Garter's flagship night Smile. A poster paying tribute to Presley, who died prematurely in 2005, now hangs on the wa...

Tuesday, 7 April 2015. Three years of Bolton’s international neo:artprize: “Why leave it to the Royal Academy or the National Portrait Gallery? I was recently asked to write a promotional feature about the annual neo:artprize, highlighting the artist-led ethos behind it. I visited neo:studios in Bolton, where I was given a tour and talked to neo:artprize co-founder Jason Simpson about the growth of the group and the way in which they have built up an alternative art scene in the town. 8217; The most comm...

The Shrieking Violet: Keywords feature: Art Culture and Society in 1980s Britain at Tate Liverpool

http://theshriekingviolets.blogspot.com/2014/02/keywords-feature-art-culture-and.html

Wednesday, 26 February 2014. Keywords feature: Art Culture and Society in 1980s Britain at Tate Liverpool. I was recently asked to write this feature for the Skinny. About a new exhibition which opens at Tate Liverpool this week (Friday February 28). It was a last-minute commission, and it would have been nice to have spoken to more people involved in the exhibition, but it was good to have an excuse to read more Raymond Williams as his books Culture and Society. And the Long Revolution. As much as by ar...

A blog about illustration, nature and sustainability. Friday, 19 September 2014. I included simple instructions for the recipients to care for their seeds. I added my signature in the soil of the picture to suggest an organic feeling of growth in my logo. Makes a lovely deep yellow with lots of texture. I used a seed template to set out the design of the text and images. Testing blueberries, turmeric, coriander and cumin mixed with egg white. Typewritten by hand then scanned onto the computer.

A blog about illustration, nature and sustainability. Saturday, 16 February 2013. Flicking through the pages of the new Cook supplement in the Guardian on Saturday I was shocked to see the Hot Pink Spelt flour beetroot bread recipe I had submitted last week. I am so delighted to have been selected and published for the Reader's recipe swap and hope lots of budding cooks have the chance to follow my recipe. Rats | Before & After Science

https://lewismadigan.wordpress.com/2009/12/02/rats

Before and After Science. Back upstairs and into the kitchen you find the rats outside of their makeshift nest. They are standing on their hind legs and staring at you. Nothing down there. you say, No food. You and the rats stare at one another. You are unsure as to who is the most confused party. With the same reverent pace as before, you crouch down to pick the key up. As you do, the smaller rat dashes up your arm before you have a chance to react. Hey! It replies, its nose twitching indignantly. You t...

Sol | Before & After Science

https://lewismadigan.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/sol

Before and After Science. The Sun has a single entity in orbit. A planet that would, in any other solar system, be so small as to be called a moon. But it is the only body around this particular star. It has circled around for countless cycles. It is pockmarked with craters; disturbances to its grey skin that, perhaps, occur once in a hundred million years. It is covered with the things. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Rubel Castle's first tour for Glendora Historical Society

A castle made of . junk? Students marvel at eclectic landmark. By Marianne Love, Staff Writer. GLENDORA - Students from an elementary school took the first public tour on Monday of Rubel Pharm and Castle, an eclectic mix of rock buildings, discarded items and a renovated citrus packing house. Rubel's crew took parts of bicycles, tires, shovels and the like and cemented them in between the river rock that makes up many of the compound's walls. It's freaky, said Robert Cortez, 8. It's weird, said Andy Will...

The Shrieks From Below

The Shrieks From Below. Sunday, 8 January 2017. From Alberta, is a band that likes to keep its profile in the shadows as much as possible, which is reflected in the fact that, although they have been active since 2010, when they released their one and only full length 'Blizzard of Saws,' the remaining releases have been a mixture of splits, demo's in cassette only format, and a (very)short EP. Listening to 'Abase' one of the cassette only demo's, it's easy to understand why Messiahlator,. Is included bef...
