The Traveling Gardener » Invoking Jane Austen

http://www.thetravelinggardener.com/2014/invoking-jane-austen

At Home in Sonoma. Bath was awash in Jane Austen character lookalikes, hundreds of Mr. Darcys and Mrs. Bennets filled the sidewalks of this patrician small city in homage to the five years Austen lived and wrote there. It was Bath’s annual week-long Jane Austen Festival and I, alas, not a Jane Austen fan, had unwittingly blundered into its midst for a three-day stay. The annual Jane Austen Festival brings hundreds of Austen-era lookalikes to the patrician city of Bath. (All photos: Yvonne Michie Horn).

The Traveling Gardener » * Paris’ hidden garden – La Vallée Suisse

http://www.thetravelinggardener.com/2015/la-vallee-suisse-paris-hidden-garden

At Home in Sonoma. Paris’ hidden garden – La Vallée Suisse. Melodramatic tableau marks the entrance to the garden …. Staircase, like much of the garden, is not real. Just to the right of his melodramatic tableau, a narrow, higgledy-piggledy stone staircase caught my eye. Making my way down, I found myself in a hidden garden. A garden created for the 1900 World’s Fair …. More canyon-like than valley …. But, wait a minute, look carefully. Those rocks edging the pond and the boulders over which the wate...

The Traveling Gardener » The Bishop’s Palace Gardens

http://www.thetravelinggardener.com/2014/the-bishops-palace-gardens

At Home in Sonoma. The Bishop’s Palace Gardens. The Cathedral of St. Andrew’s image captured in a reflecting pool. (All photos by Yvonne Horn). England, Wells –. The Bishop of Bath and Wells, Robert Burnell, was staggeringly wealthy, owner of 82 estates in 19 countries. Given transportation options at his time of tenure (1275 to 1291), staggering must also have applied to his traveling schedule if he set out to drop by all of them in a year’s time, let alone unpack his bags and stay awhile. It was an ove...

The Traveling Gardener » Cornwall – the Lost Gardens of Heligan

http://www.thetravelinggardener.com/2013/cornwall-the-lost-gardens-of-heligan

At Home in Sonoma. Cornwall – the Lost Gardens of Heligan. A garden, perhaps, lay hidden under 70-years of debris. (Photo: Heligan Gardens LTD.). It was February 16, 1990. Only the tops of palm trees gave a hint of what might lay beneath. Workmen began to chop away with machetes at monstrous blankets of undergrowth, a 70-year accumulation of fallen trees, brambles, ivy, and once-tidy boxwood hedges grown rampant into high, impenetrable walls. Gardens designed to impress …. Then came World War I …. Prior ...

At Home in Sonoma. Tivoli Gardens – yes, there are gardens in famed Tivoli Gardens. DENMARK Copenhagen – When Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens opens for the season in the spring of 2012, its ornate gates will swing wide for the 170th time providing, as from Tivoli’s first days, a magical place for recreation and fresh air. A magical place for recreation and fresh air …. Something for everyone …. The something for me was Tivoli’s gardens, 15 gardens large and small – romantic gardens as well as pleasure ...
