Illustrations by Julie Anne Whittet. Campfire cooking: an encounter with the veggie dog. Finally it's that time of year when we can comfortably ditch the city limits for more primitive surrounds. Gearing up for a weekend in the woods, however, raises an important question for vegetarians: what do you stick on the end on your fire pit skewer? Supermarkets and natural food stores have an answer. T he veggie dog. Crepes to have and to fold. Slathered with nutella and rolled up with strawberries, crêpe...

Illustrations by Julie Anne Whittet. When life gives you garlic, eat the scapes. Owner Ian Richardson is in the business of garlic scapes and remembers when he first introduced these peculiar plants to his market customers. Illustrations by Julie Anne Whittet. The Spot: Il Tavolino (the small table). You can never have too many cafes to choose from. The arrival of a new coffee shop is cause for celebration, especially when it pops up in the heart of the Mission, just a few blocks from the beach. If you haven’t been yet, head to Il Tavolino. For your next cappuccino, grilled sandwich, or scoop of gelato: three essential components of Italian living that owner Alessandro De Angelis is sharing with the Kelowna community. As a ...

Illustrations by Julie Anne Whittet. The Spot: Latin Fiesta. The street sign is easy to miss and there's no menu online, but traffic in and out of Rutland's. Latin Fiesta is the only place in Kelowna where you'll find traditional Salvadoran dishes. For a cash-strapped college student, it was a refreshing break from a slice of pizza, that hit the spot for just a few bucks. The same is true for Latin Fiesta, one pupusa will set you back $3.00 (sample a few other dishes and two can dine $20).
