Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The Crow Road and the Subject of Framing. Content warning: discussion of death and religion. Also, references to a corpse blowing up due to poor medical practice. Iain Banks was one of those authors who, like Siobhan Dowd, I wish Id discovered earlier, if only to hope I could one day meet them and shake their hand. As it is, Im left with the legacy of their work to peruse and marvel at. Long-time readers of this blog will remember Ceilidhs heartfelt tribute. Links to this post.

The Book Lantern: May 2014
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2014_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 24, 2014. Sever: A weird finish. Caught me by surprise. Fever. Added to that surprise. I liked both books with some caveats, but overall I enjoyed them more than I didnt. I dont know what to think about Sever. On the other. oh, dear. Lets just say that maybe the ending was a bit too much. Short review: its an okay ending, but not overwhelming. . Long review contains spoilers. Links to this post. 2014 prequels and sequels challenge. Friday, May 23, 2014. We need to talk about "Fangirl".

The Book Lantern: Who We Are
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/p/who-we-are.html
I'm Ceilidh/Kayleigh, I'm 22 and recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Celtic/English literature, meaning I'm out in the real world trying to sort myself out. I'm a native Scot, obnoxious accent and all. My name is Cory and I'm American. I've pretty much been to every state in the US. With all that traveling I've had a lot of time to read. And I'm a senior in High School. And I'm writing a contemporary YA novel right now involving a band geek, unrequited love, and an overbearing mother.

The Book Lantern: September 2014
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2014_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 28, 2014. Review: Cress by Marissa Meyer. Few books can keep me up until late at night, and these ones definitely did. Like Cinder and Scarlet, Cress is a sci-fi retelling of a classical fairy tale. Like Cinder and Scarlet, it subverts some of the originals themes, though to a lesser extent. I wont get into too much details about the plot - because, seriously, spoilers! Links to this post. Categories: 2014 prequels and sequels challenge. Saturday, September 27, 2014. I cant handle it!

The Book Lantern: February 2015
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2015_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 20, 2015. Review: Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff. Because what's a better pick one week after the most lovey-dovey holiday in the Western world than a story about psychotic murders and ghosts haunting their former BFFs, am I right? Here's the thing - if I had to find a literary equivalent to this book, it would be Laurie Halse Anderson's "Wintergirls" crossed with a supernatural murder mystery. If that's a ringing endorsement to you, great. But I'm not sure it worked. I still read it...

The Book Lantern: Read It With Me: Before I Die
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2015/02/read-it-with-me-before-i-die.html
Monday, February 16, 2015. Read It With Me: Before I Die. I don't know if I'll be picking "Bumped" up again. It's not that I don't love that book - oh, I love that book - but doing chapter by chapter deconstructions is hard work, and not always an easy one. Major kudos to Ana Mardoll. And the folks at das-sporking. For keeping it up, week after week. That said, I can. Because people are just not talking about these issues, but hey, I'm just one lousy taxpayer. P 1, Paperback edition. Tessa is not happy a...

Wednesday, May 11, 2011. What Makes a Good Book? We here at the Book Lantern always like to be honest with you readers, so here's the truth: these days, it's tough to be a book reviewer – especially one who is not afraid to give negative reviews. (Now, I'm not talking professional. I have to say that question has been popping up in my head quite a bit over the past few weeks, whether I'm reading or. 8221; Now, what is. The Book Lantern: Disappearing Parent Syndrome
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2011/04/disappearing-parent-syndrome.html
Thursday, April 21, 2011. Disappearing Parent Syndrome, or DPS, is a term I coined while reading Maureen Johnson's. 13 Little Blue Envelopes. It is meant to describe a reoccurring theme in YA fiction where the parents vanish from the story. There are many YA novels where this is handled well - either as a plot point so necessary it makes or breaks the story as in the case of. The Mortal Instruments Trilogy. The main character's mother is in a coma for all but the start and finish of the novels. In the.
