This Colonial Life

Thursday, June 3, 2010. Singapore - the early days. So this is how we would have arrived in Singapore and provides a snapshot of the type of life my parents would have enjoyed in the 1950s. Our first residence was a flat at Fife House in Grange Road, which was off Orchard Road, one of the main thoroughfares out of the city. This is the view from the balcony looking up Grange Road and as you can see below, I really was quite young to have travelled so far at such an early age. I was born in. I exclaimed o...

This Colonial Life: I was born in..................

http://www.thiscoloniallife.blogspot.com/2010/06/i-was-born-in.html

Thursday, June 3, 2010. I was born in. Glasgow, Scotland at 1pm on the 4th of April 1953. Just myself, my mother Amy and the hospital staff in attendance, as my father Jimmy, who was an outstanding amateur golfer, was out on the course apparently. He was a qualified Chartered Accountant who had married Amy, a Registered Nurse, on the 18th of December 1951 in Glasgow's All Saint's Church. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This Colonial Life: Somewhere in the middle of my first 18 years!

http://www.thiscoloniallife.blogspot.com/2010/06/1st-post-coming-soon.html

Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Somewhere in the middle of my first 18 years! I exclaimed out loud, as in my anguish I had flung my hand against the wall next to my bed and accidentally bent my fingers backwards. Pain was now added to the sadness and grief, I was already experiencing, having found myself left in a new and unfamiliar world dominated by concrete, steel and crowds of boys and people I did not know. From the dark, in the direction of the bed crammed up against the bottom of mine drifted,.

The Surf Shack!: Septics, Steve the plumber, roof flashing and final cladding

http://buildingthesurfshack.blogspot.com/2010/06/septics-steve-plumber-roof-flashing-and.html

Monday, June 14, 2010. Septics, Steve the plumber, roof flashing and final cladding. Luckily, the first earthmoving contractor I contacted had the perfect piece of machinery to do the job which fitted quite easily through the space available. Of course, we now also needed to call on the services of a plumber and we chose the inimitable Steve Larkman, also a local musician , who I had first met at the Great Southern Institute of Technology where I work. I must acknowledge here Michelle's fantastic contrib...

The Surf Shack!: The back door, ceilings and internal frames

http://buildingthesurfshack.blogspot.com/2010/06/back-door-ceilings-and-internal-frames.html

Monday, June 14, 2010. The back door, ceilings and internal frames. So now all we need is to install a back door and and the project will have reached the milestone of lock up. Yee Ha! So all is looking pretty damn fine from the outside now so finally we are working inside which is a relief as winter is now upon us and finally our floor is protected from the elements. Although the ceilings are well over 3 metres at the highest point, getting the sheets up and fixing them is not too bad, once we have a or...

The Surf Shack!: October 2009

http://buildingthesurfshack.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Well - what did this block look like? So glad you asked. It has a 10 degrees slope, it was cleared to some extent at the top and thick with trees surrounded by a deep layer of Karri leaf and bark litter at the bottom. What we did not know at the time of purchase was the extent and length of time it would take to clean the block up and make it as fire safe as possible. For a few months though, it was left to it's own devices until my Mother passed away in March 2008. At the tim...

http://ramsnakeeyes.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 1, 2015. Exploring photography using an iPhone 6. For the last 2 years, I have chosen a specific interest to study in more depth. The first year, I chose cryptic crosswords as it had always annoyed the hell out of me that I had trouble with them. I spent the year doing the cryptics in The Age newspaper and by the end of it felt I certainly had a far better grasp of them. I ended up developing an app. However, I have decided that it might be easier and more interesting to use an iPhone 6...

The Surf Shack!: The Shed

http://buildingthesurfshack.blogspot.com/2010/06/shed.html

Tuesday, June 1, 2010. An interesting and sustainable aspect of our building project is that it was designed around a 6 X 6.5 metre shed, Michelle had purchased, that resided in the back yard of our architect's home in Albany where we also live. It was very similar to that pictured above but with a wooden frame, steel purlins and Woodland Grey Colorbond. It did not take long to get the shed down and we carefully marked each sheet, frame and purlin to ensure we could get it back together again. Roland mad...

The Surf Shack!: Michelle's purlins, roof and cladding

http://buildingthesurfshack.blogspot.com/2010/06/purlins-and-roof.html

Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Michelle's purlins, roof and cladding. Michelle had been really fretting about her floor, as it had now been exposed to the elements for more than the recommended 3 months and was starting to show signs of deterioration, so we got stuck into her end as we had the steel 150 X 50 purlins already available to put straight up. We were now we were ready to replace the roofing sheets on to the now almost completely rebuilt shed. This made it a little difficult to get the zincalume sheeti...

This College Town

Different college town. Same girl. Let's start this adventure. Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Is anybody out there? Anyway, when I realized this blog was still here, I knew that this was not really the kind of blog I wanted to be writing. I want to write about things that are interesting to a broader audience, and writing about my wedding and blog-sharing with other brides-to-be was a good way to get my feet wet. Now that wedding planning is sort of winding down (or amping up? Peonies and Potted Plants. 8226;...
