Empress Matilda – Her Fight for the Throne. In 1141, England nearly had a reigning queen. The banquet was on the table, but the coronation never took place! Matilda was the woman in question, already Dowager Empress of Germany, and a capable, strong ruler – so why did she fail? But, what about Mary, the greatest of the saints? And what about all those wealthy business widows, princesses and abbesses?
