BEING MADE NEW: The Heart of the Matter
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-heart-of-matter.html
The Heart of the Matter. I first wrote this piece in 2013 for the Celebrate Kids email newsletter, and it actually ended up going rather "viral" that year. In re-reading it today, I realized its message is still the heart of the matter in terms of what it means to be a mom. Thus, rather than coming up with something new for the occasion, I simply share this truth again. And I felt truly blessed by his desire to bless me. But I didn’t know what to say. In terms of my calling. With my kids – mentally...

BEING MADE NEW: Homeschooling Isn't Free...
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2015/03/homeschooling-isnt-free.html
But, then again, nothing worth doing ever is. And - contrary to the myth perpetuated by its proponents - neither is public school. I know why they ask. For some reason, despite years of writing checks to pay for school supplies, back-to-school clothes, registration fees, parking permits, activity fees, hot lunches, lab fees, yearbooks, instrument rental fees, sports equipment, etc. - in fact, in 2013 the average family spent more than $630 on school-related expenses. On the one hand, it's hard to give an...

BEING MADE NEW: My Father's World Kindergarten: Grid-Format Lesson Plans
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2010/07/my-fathers-world-kindergarten-grid.html
My Father's World Kindergarten: Grid-Format Lesson Plans. As anyone who's heard me "talk homeschool" over the past year knows, I am a huge fan of the. MFW) curriculum. Using it beginning with the 2009-2010 school year got us out of the "curriculum wilderness". In which we had wandered for our first three years of homeschooling, and we fully intend to continue with it long-term, probably even through high school. Much smoother (and more fun! And probably first grade as well).with my daycare children.

BEING MADE NEW: Ten Tidbits: Winter 2015
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2015/04/ten-tidbits-winter-2015.html
Ten Tidbits: Winter 2015. It's been a long time since I wrote a simple "here's what we've been doing" post, and it's long overdue. As I mentioned when I wrote back in January about needing to re-calibrate my priorities. I want to get back to such simple pleasures. Sadly, I haven't (yet) been successful in regaining the mental and emotional balance I spoke of back then. But that's still my goal.and I do intend to make it happen! 1 We've seen our former TEACHERS' TOTS FRIENDS. 3 Both girls took up KNITTING.

BEING MADE NEW: Wonderful Workboxes
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2009/04/wonderful-workboxes.html
A few weeks ago on The Homeschool Lounge. THL), I caught a comment about something called "workboxes." Being the organizational junkie that I am (remember, my husband calls me Rou-Tina. My interest was sparked, and I began to regularly monitor the THL discussion. Before long, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon! Since then, I've seen and heard that this workbox thing is sweeping through the homeschool community; apparently, more and more users of My Father's World. And Five in a Row. Group on the subject.

BEING MADE NEW: No, I Won't "Help" You
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2015/07/no-i-wont-help-you.html
No, I Won't "Help" You. Dear Fellow Wisconsin Homeschoolers:. I treasure being an advocate for homeschooling. And I love mentoring new homeschoolers, locally and beyond. I rejoice when parents understand that homeschooling is the best educational option, and I delight in helping folks get started well. And it is precisely for that reason - i.e., that I want what's truly best. Wisconsin homeschoolers, me "helping" someone to participate would be like aiding and abetting a person's suicide.while also k...

BEING MADE NEW: Fostering Your Kids' Love for Literature
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2011/09/fostering-your-kids-love-for-literature.html
Fostering Your Kids' Love for Literature. When I was a classroom teacher working with immigrant kids at both the middle and high school levels, I rebelled. I simply refused to pull the dusty old literature anthologies off the shelves.because, even then, I had Charlotte Mason ideas. And annually enjoyed leading my high schoolers through mandated group study of Romeo and Juliet. I shied away from whole-class literature units as much as possible, too. I devised a series of projects - at least one that highl...

BEING MADE NEW: Happy 2nd Birthday to My "Twin Boys"
http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2015/03/happy-2nd-birthday-to-my-twin-boys.html
Happy 2nd Birthday to My "Twin Boys". Several years ago - perhaps when the girls were seven and eight - I had a dream that I'd given birth to twin sons. In the dream, they were young toddlers, and I was trying to juggle their needs with everything else. I remember feeling both exhilarated and exhausted. And when I woke up, I thought, "Wow. What if that really happens? In a way, it has. HRR) was "born" a few days later - a belated twin, but a twin nonetheless. But they've also brought great joy. CHO i...

My Father's World: Adventures. About a week ago, I wrote a review of. However, God is good.all the time. He sustained me through all the angst of trying out curriculum after curriculum. He allowed the girls to make regular cognitive progress despite our fits and starts. And He led us back to MFW. The MFW core we used this past year, which the MFW website. Programs to its more academically challenging five-year core. It seemed tailor-made for us. We were able to study:. And the girls each created a beauti...
