二百多年的歷史，造就了新竹古蹟之豐，囊括山海湖潭、風土人文，新竹街道的特殊魅力在於其深具 人性尺度的空間 、隨處可見的 盎然綠意 、以及 徒步可及的百變容顏 ，可說是麻，雀雖小、五臟俱全。 新竹古稱 竹塹 ，為昔日平埔族 竹塹社番 所居住之地。 清康熙二十二年(1683 A.D.)台灣併入清朝版圖 ，竹塹歸諸羅縣管轄，始有漢人至此開墾。 雍正元年(1723A.D.)竹塹脫離諸羅改屬淡水廳 至光緒元年(1875A.D.)淡水廳分為淡、新二縣，改竹塹稱新竹並首度設縣。 光緒二十一年(1895A.D.)台灣割讓予日本，本縣改隸台北縣為新竹支廳 下置五支廳 光緒二十七年(1920A.D.)合併新竹、桃園廳為新竹州，下置八郡(包括今 、竹、苗等地)，州治設於新竹郡。
