3 Death Valley, CA: To Savor the Warmth—Or We So We Thought. Destinations like Death Valley trigger identification within us with explorers to remote locations because of the additional preparation that is required. Usually we break-up our 2 week stay in isolated Death Valley with a shopping day in Pahrump, NV to take the pressure off but this year it would be different, we’d make do with what we could take in with us at the trip’s start. Spending Thanksgiving in Death Valley had become a new tradition f...

The pyramid of Pyramid Trail in New Mexico. HIKING OUR WAY HOME. Finally out of the deep snow, Humphrey Peak was still too far away. Despite the warm spring weather, we assumed there still might be too much snow on the mountain by the time we arrived in Flagstaff, but we showed up anyway and immediately started asking questions. An RV park staff member was quick to share her experience. “Will there be snow on the trail? At 12,000' for the first time. (Humphrey Peak Trail.). Soap Creek at Marble Canyon, AZ.

Ldquo;Uh, sure…Great Basin National Park.” Well, I’d never heard of it either, like the lovely Colorado National Monument that we stumbled upon last year, but Bill made Great Basin the first destination of our 2016/17 snowbird season. The colorful aspens were delightful accents to the mountain landscape. But, but, but…”. The typical formations at Lehman Caves were worth a look. But 2016 was different: Bi...

Travelfit 2011 - 2017. Velofun 2003 - 2010. Immediately on alert for bears. We quickly learned a year ago when hiking in nearby Yellowstone NP that clapping and talking were not sustainable ways to alert bears to our presence—just try to continuously talk loudly while hiking uphill at 8,000’ for hours. Then we tumbled to a very un-PC trick to announce ourselves, which was playing music on our cell phones that we already carried in mesh belt bags. Knowing that an employee was killed for food, not defense,...

Finally, a namesake specimen of organ pipe cactus. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, AZ. 520-387-6849, ext. 7302). The unusually lovely, buzzing campground looked like a trafficker's nightmare because of the low vegetation height and so many folks out strolling with their dogs. We surely would be safe in the campground, which was a start. We decided to stay but Bill quickly determined that the hiking wasn't as grand as he expected and that a 3 night visit would suffice. Who would have thought that the planned 3 day drive from Tucson, AZ to Albuquerque, NM would take us almost 3 weeks to complete? Most of the detours were delightful (except for 1 day devoured by a lost wallet) and several detours resulted in some unexpected first's for us. Who would have thought? Phoenix, AZ Detour. Travelfit 2011 - 2017. Velofun 2003 - 2010. WRAPPING-UP IN THE SW. April - May 2016). A typical wildflower huntress during Death Valley’s big bloom. Our annual month-long stay in Albuquerque earned the “Spring Training Camp” label this year because instead of just maintaining our fitness level with readily available hiking and biking outings, we actually were training for an event. Blooms like these are easy to spot and enjoy. Two, Not One, Events. We were buzzing with excitement: for only the 2nd time i...
