After completing their education at the COPA schools, students have the opportunity to attend the local state secondary school or a Catholic High School in Barahona. The trade room project in Bombita also provides a number of students with the opportunity to learn a trade as an alternative to further education. A number of former COPA students have now attended University. COPA supports a youth work project in each community, which provides a place for young people after school. A brief history of COPA.

The DR was explored and claimed by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. The island of Hispaniola became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. In 1697 Spain recognized French rule over the western third of the island, which in 1804 became Haiti. The remainder of the island, by then known as Santo Domingo, sought to gain its own independence in 1821 but was conquered and ruled by the Haitians for 22 years.
