Two Years In Timbuktu: Helping C. go to medical school

http://www.twoyearsintimbuktu.blogspot.com/2013/11/coniba-berthe.html

Two Years In Timbuktu. Sunday, November 3, 2013. Helping C. go to medical school. In Mali, one doctor. Serves a population of more than 10,000 people. By contrast, the average doctor in the United States serves a population of 417. Mali needs many more skilled doctors and nurses, and a young woman from my Peace Corps village of Kadiaradugu is trying to become one of them. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Two Years In Timbuktu. Sunday, June 2, 2013. Next Up - DRC. It has been two years since I finished Peace Corps in Mali. Since then, I've decided to focus on refugee health and humanitarian assistance in conflict areas. As part of my MPH program, I'll be in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo doing humanitarian work. Two Years In Timbuktu: October 2009

http://www.twoyearsintimbuktu.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Two Years In Timbuktu. Friday, October 23, 2009. It's October in Mali; the rainy season is coming to an end and soon "cold season" will be upon us. That means the temperature will dip into the low 80s or maybe even the shockingly cold high 70s. Accordingly, my Malian friends will be donning their massive puffy winter coats and wool hats with tassels. Oh, and if you ever wondered where your mom's neon pink and green ski onesie. From 1982 went, here's your answer: to a 42-year old Malian man riding a moto.

Beatrice Goes to Africa: Mali Midwives Training in August

http://beatriceinafrica.blogspot.com/2010/06/mali-midwives-training-in-august.html

Beatrice Goes to Africa. Sunday, June 13, 2010. Mali Midwives Training in August. A Malian proverb says that a woman in labor has one foot on earth, and one foot in the grave. The proverb is all too true: a woman in Mali has a 1 in 25 lifetime chance of dying from childbearing complications. Last year's training was (to my knowledge) the only follow up training my friends have had since they received their initial midwife training many years ago. The sad truth is that the Malian Ministry of Health si...

Beatrice Goes to Africa: Wedding Season

http://beatriceinafrica.blogspot.com/2010/03/wedding-season.html

Beatrice Goes to Africa. Monday, March 8, 2010. People keep asking me when I'm going to get married. At almost 26, I'm too old not to be married. A woman at a wedding last week actually laughed at me when I told her I wasn't married - she didn't believe me! Surely, someone as educated, rich and beautiful as myself MUST. Be married, n'est pas? The conversation usually goes something like this:. They tell me. What in the world could I possibly be waiting for, they wonder? They sigh and conclude,. If a Mali...

Beatrice Goes to Africa: Is life in outlaw territory worth it?

http://beatriceinafrica.blogspot.com/2010/02/is-life-in-outlaw-territory-worth-it.html

Beatrice Goes to Africa. Sunday, February 7, 2010. Is life in outlaw territory worth it? I ended my last entry with the question "what makes it worth it? And I realize that I have yet to answer it. It's mainly because I'm not exactly sure what drives people to choose to live in such terrible conditions. So where does that leave us? Good luck to your friends and their HIV project. Beatrice Goes to Africa: Mali Midwives Training a Success!!

http://beatriceinafrica.blogspot.com/2010/09/mali-midwives-training-success_05.html

Beatrice Goes to Africa. Sunday, September 5, 2010. Mali Midwives Training a Success! We finished the fourth and final "Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor (AMTSL)" training sessions in Koutiala, Mali this past Saturday. Although everyone was exhausted by the end after having worked for two weeks straight, I'm happy to report that the trainings were a success! And yet these women persist, some working for free as their villages refuse to pay them for their vital and often life-saving services&#...

2012-11-16 @ 18:42:05 Utflykter. British Columbia och Alberta. British Columbia och Alberta.

New Orleans

Tuesday, August 28, 2007. Reflecting on August 29th 2007. I had the opportunity to spend the summer working with some amazing people in efforts to build the New Orleans community and it changed my life. I grew up while I was there. I saw new hues of the universal qualities inherent to the human condition, remembered that I am the only person who can allow myself to be happy and I began to make art for myself. I felt something in the humidity that caused a sense of urgency. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
