Postcards from Uganda

Thursday, January 31, 2008. I touched down in Uganda in February 2007 with too much luggage, airplane hair and many anxieties about the weeks and months ahead. When I board a plane in a few days, I will be both going and leaving home. Saying goodbye to people Ive grown to love in order to return to others who Ive deeply missed is a bittersweet affair, but its part of a larger experience that I would neither trade nor forgo. Posted by chik @ 11:03 PM. Sunday, January 27, 2008. I don't usually do this.

Postcards from Uganda: November 2007

http://ugandachik.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 15, 2007. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place in Uganda on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. In these weeks immediately prior to CHOGM, preparations have taken on a frenzied pace. Construction around the clock. Digging crews lining every main road, patching potholes, creating sidewalks and busting pipes. Road closures for convoy rehearsals. (Heaven forbid the visitors should wait in traffic! Are you ready for CHOGM? I ran into som...

Postcards from Uganda: July 2007

http://ugandachik.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Good books come to those who wait. Sometime during my first month here, I ventured to interview a judge. Rather than make an appointment, I was advised to just show up at his office and seek an audience. I was prepared to wait and while waiting, I read all of Uganda's Succession Act, Evidence Act, Criminal Procedure Rules and Civil Procedure Rules. Waiting has reacquainted me with an once-favored activity: leisure reading. Since my arrival, I've read:. No Future Without Forgiveness.

Wednesday, August 29, 2007. I can get used to sharing buses with chickens and civil litigation without any pre-trial discovery, but I can't handle pool-side normalcy. I just can't. Postcards from Uganda: May 2007

http://ugandachik.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 30, 2007. My friend Karen visited me in. After a fun-filled week of safari, sightseeing, and lots of food and conversations, the visit nearly ended in an arrest. I went with Karen to the airport on Friday night. I made sure she checked in and hugged her good-bye. When I tried to exit the building, I learned that only ticketed passengers were allowed in that part of the building. As I walked toward the supervisor, my American brain was churning. I didn’t see any. But the security officer wa...

There's only one thing that you know how to do well. And that's be you, be what you're like, be like yourself. They Might Be Giants. Antibiotics, Doctors, and Books. Today I'm very weak. I've been pretty tired lately, and haven't really known why, but I've just felt like an old woman. I was like- what the hell? Me: I think I have a sinus infection. Dr: You should probably lose weight. Me: Um.this is about my sinuses, I feel like total crap and I need you to look up my nose and help me out here. I had hig...

There's only one thing that you know how to do well. And that's be you, be what you're like, be like yourself. They Might Be Giants. But I don't know if I could actually do that- like, just have a relationship that I knew wasn't going anywhere. I feel like for me to really invest, I can't know for sure that it's going to end really soon. And I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Posted by bethany at 10:14 PM. There's only one thing that you know how to do well. And that's be you, be what you're like, be like yourself. They Might Be Giants. Time and again, as I've talked to international students here, one of the things they always comment on is how odd it is that we use the question, "How are you? We had a Kenyan student here a couple years ago who seemed to misunderstand the whole greeting thing, but after I thought about it, it shed some light on this "how are you doing? Me: Hey there Hezekiah! This worked ...

So I got pulled over and got a ticket for running a red light tonight. Which, usually, wouldn't make me totally angry- except for the fact that THE LIGHT WAS YELLOW. I have no problem getting a ticket when I deserve it, I mean, I took the risk and am paying the penalty. But when I actually didn't do anything? Or do I go to court and plead not guilty? 3) Has any time passed?

OK, so I want to find out if I am crazy, or whether this is a normal thing that everyone does. Alright alright, so I concede that I'm crazy- but now I just want to see if I'm crazy in this particular area. I agree that this isn't necessarily a good thing, but what I'm wondering about is how. What is this search all about? Is it just the result of loneliness? Someone else sa...
