Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. A democracy of deception. Today I read a very interesting article in a newsletter produced by the. Centre for Eastern Studies. In Poland, describing how different candidates for the presidential election in Belarus are running their campaigns. The 51-year-old also employs more subtle methods to his propaganda. A series of weekly concerts in major cities, featuring famous musical names from Belarus and Russia, were advertised u...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. Last night I had the perfect birthday celebration. One of my favourite groups, the Youngblood Brass Band. Was playing a live gig at Cargo in Shoreditch. I've been there once before, when the YBB performed there last year - and this time was even better. The show began with a quality warm-up act. A young guy named Joe Driscoll. Here's a clip from 'Brooklyn', one of their best and most popular tunes:. Posted by Frederick at 14:30.

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. The first stages of an important mission. I always expected the 'Informal Preparatory Gathering' for UN youth representatives to be an intensive affair. Taking place in Uppsala, Sweden, this was a chance to discover a new place at the same time as doing important work to further the cause of youth issues on the international agenda. Working at the UN is going to be an incredibly complicated business. There is so much to rememb...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. Touchdown with a Blast. The reason I’d wanted to try and get a camera so soon was because today a very important preparation meeting for the CSD took place at Columbia University. Entitled Youth Energy Blast , the event was organised by popular NGO SustainUS. Workers and Trade Unions. Scientific and Technological Communities. How will NGOs and Local Authorities get along? It’s a potentially volcanic equation. Contrary to these...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. During the week there were a few more meetings, including one with the Millennium Campaign's Youth Co-ordinator. I'm impressed they have created such a post - young people are vital to the MDGs and implementation will be impossible without our involvement. I believe they are really. Posted by Frederick at 02:30. Back to NYC, back to work! The train returning me to New York from Montréal arrived perfectly on time, coming into Penn ...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. I never thought the day would come when anything faintly resembling the shadow of a story regarding the situation of young people in modern society hit the headlines. This doesn't cover half the topic, but is at least a start. The youth of today are becoming disengaged from society, disillusioned with the system, apathetic about democracy and politics in general. Why? Of course this particular problem concerning public portrayal i...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. I guess one of the random highlights of the day was finding an unexpected drinks reception in the UN lobby. We went upstairs from the dungeon-like basement to discover free beverages, a jazz trio and lots of well-dressed people socialising happily. Apart from that, I finally got my hands on a camera and was able to start filming. TakingITGlobal. Feel 20 years younger - get a Youth Delegate! Do you need a new face? We had about 10 ...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. End of the road. New Year’s Day was a tired affair. We slept for most of it. On the way from the central station to my friend Adam’s apartment, one of the first things I noticed was the amount of homeless people sleeping in underpasses. At least they are sheltered from the worst weather elements here, but it’s still incredibly cold and the problem stares everyone in the face why hasn’t something been done? It was empty apart from ...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. After hastily purchasing milk and a box of cereal for breakfast and taking it back to my rather luxurious room at the Hotel Affinia 50, I met up with Keeley and Kris in the main lobby. Our afternoon agenda consisted of an 'informal' meeting in a UN conference room where the youth resolution was being discussed and negotiated. It was a very intensive session, but thankfully did not run to its full three hour allocation. The last fe...

Travel, photography, politics, news, current affairs, music, sport, youth. The furthest point away from home. Bucharest is the most eastern point of my trip, it’s getting hard to believe I’ve been through so many different places during the last month and this is one of the final stops of my European adventure. It was very annoying that I had to spend most of the 29th in a train, but there were some really nice views of a sunset as we crossed a bridge over the Bulgaria-Romania border. Walking around the ...
