Picture of the month. Home = urswick.com. The small and peaceful hamlet of Hawkfield is seen beyond the large acreage of ripening cereals. The distant cattle are grazing on Quernbarrow Hill, so called because, exceptionally in this area of limestone geology, it is capped by sandstone which has survived the erosive processes of glacial ice and weather. The sandstone was quarried on a small scale in times gone by to make querns for the milling of cereals in the home.
