Razing the Bar: Try to Praise the Mutilitated World
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2014/08/try-to-praise-mutilitated-world.html
Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Try to Praise the Mutilitated World. Try to praise the mutilated world. Remember June's long days,. And wild strawberries, drops of rosé wine. The nettles that methodically overgrow. The abandoned homesteads of exiles. You must praise the mutilated world. You watched the stylish yachts and ships;. One of them had a long trip ahead of it,. While salty oblivion awaited others. You've seen the refugees going nowhere,. You've heard the executioners sing joyfully. And they are behead...

Razing the Bar: December 2013
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 14, 2013. What's the word for the quality of being an asshole? The latter is an old-fashioned one, but perhaps still serviceable. This may be the weirdest musical commentary you ever read, but basically I look for so. In 12-step programs, the fourth step is deceptively simple: "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." That's it. It can take you a lifetime to get it right. Razing the Bar: The $77,777,777 Question
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-77777777-question.html
Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The $77,777,777 Question. Christians face a never-ending conundrum: the promise of new life vs. the frequent reality of the same old life. The apostle Paul, ever the rabble rouser, started it all when he wrote, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creatio . N: The old has gone, the new is here! Why does “new creation” so frequently look like the old disintegration and chaos? And what do we do about the disconnects between doctrine and reality? If so, what changed?

Razing the Bar: Cowtown
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2014/04/cowtown.html
Thursday, April 24, 2014. There’s a great David Foster Wallace short story called “The Soul is Not a Smithy” that is set in Columbus, Ohio, 1960. I love DFW for many reasons, but one of them is that although he never lived in Columbus, Ohio, and wasn’t even alive in 1960, his story rang so true that I shook my head in disbelief. It’s a wonderful city; imperfect, with unresolved growing pains, and too damned cold. But I’m so happy to be here, right in the middle of it. And look: no cows. The Hurst Review ...

Razing the Bar: Safe Inside the Days
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2009/04/safe-inside-days.html
Monday, April 06, 2009. Safe Inside the Days. I wanna have our baby. Somedays I think that maybe. This ol' world's too fucked up. For any firstborn son. There is all this untouched beauty. The light the dark both running through me. Is there still redemption for anyone. Turn the world around. Lay my burden down. Turn this world around. Bring the whole thing down. Andy, I saw you and your wife across the room after the Dr West/Lupe conversation and thought, Oh! I must catch him! It was so nice to meet you...

Other side of dawn: Heaven and Hell
http://othersideofdawn.blogspot.com/2009/01/heaven-and-hell.html
Other side of dawn. The McCollum family's journeys abroad in service of Asia's Hope. Thursday, January 29, 2009. Yes I know. It's 3am, a ridiculous time to be blogging. But I just woke up from a very intense and very disturbing dream, wherein an American friend was shot by a Cambodian police officer in a case of mistaken identity. So I'm a bit rattled anyway. Inside the compound, I watched a pair of doctors examine and treat a couple dozen children, most of whom were no older than my daughter. Many o...

Razing the Bar: Chains
http://andywhitman.blogspot.com/2014/04/chains.html
Friday, April 18, 2014. Every year about this time the weather gets warmer and the grass gets green and the birds start singing again, and I think about my mother. Her birthday is coming up, so it’s natural to associate that with the emergence of spring and new li fe. But in truth, there was little of new life in her. But I’m ready to let her go. It’s about time. And it occurs to me that I don’t know how much there is left. This is how it ends with me. Andy, I am not your mother. Im not even older th...
