An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. First of the Jupiter pods. It's now 72 days after sowing, and the first of the little purple pods are forming on the greenhouse plants - the outside plants despite being about half the size, are only a week or so behind. The greenhouse plants are also showing signs of multiple branching beginning. Links to this post. Purple snow pea 'Jupiter' growout. Greenhouse Jupiter, 61 days from sowing. Outside Jupiter, 61 days. Templeton's Mendelania: Potato Onions - a strange seedling
http://templetonsmedelania.blogspot.com/2015/03/potato-onions-strange-seedling.html
An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Potato Onions - a strange seedling. Spud onions reproduce vegetatively - plant one bulb, it divides, and produces multiple bulbs at the end of the season. They aren't supposed to flower, but Kelly Winterton got them to, and distributed seed. One of my seedlings this year has produced a quite unusual reproductive strategy - it has divided at the base, flowered in its first year and produced seeds, and also produced topsets!

An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Semi-leafless or hypertendril coloured peas. An added bonus reported on the Mudflower blog is the reduced need for supplemental watering. Today I've soaked 100 of these seeds. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Templeton's Mendelania: March 2014
http://templetonsmedelania.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Coloured Carrots,: the next generation. It has finally rained, so perhaps the autumn break has arrived while the soil is still warm. Tomatoes have been pulled, the bed dug straight away, a bit of sheep poo and dolomite, a heavy water, leave for a day, a final rake over and the carrots are sown. I've sown four blocks, about 80 cm each along the metre wide bed, in the order French Round F1, Deep Purple F1, Pale Mauve F1, and Deep Mauve F1.

Templeton's Mendelania: "Good data never goes stale..."
http://templetonsmedelania.blogspot.com/2015/06/good-data-never-goes-stale.html
An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Good data never goes stale.". Such was the advice from my thesis supervisor, regarding record keeping back in the eighties. She was right, and 20 years later I got a published paper after reworking my data on grasstrees ( Xanthorrhoea. Sp) and fire inspired by a technique used to analyse lichen ( Rhizocarpon. Sp) on rockfall debris in New Zealand. Go figure. So, plant breeding? An added bonus is the slight. Edit: I went back to the origin...

An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Green Mountain Spud Onion F2 seedlings. In this generation, 15 out of 34 emerged seeds are yellow. This will only be a problem if they fail to thrive, so it will be interesting to see what eventuates. Links to this post. Purple snows and snaps - autumn 2014 growout. Templeton's Mendelania: February 2014
http://templetonsmedelania.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Short coloured carrot project progress. These have all gone to seed over summer, and I've sorted the plants according to root shape and depth of remnant colour - in some cases its difficult to tell what the original carrot was like, but I've given it my best shot. Carrots produce a lot. Links to this post. A Parsnip F1 Growout Update. The rest of the Kral F1 seed was sown about a month ago under heavy undefelt mulch at my second garden, b...

Templeton's Mendelania: December 2013
http://templetonsmedelania.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
An informal, occasional blog about vegetable breeding and growing. Green Mountain Potato Onion Seedling progress. My Green Mountain F1 plants are showing lots of diversity. Some plants are just growing big onions, and aren't showing any sign of dividing or flowering. Others have one or two divisions. Some have divided multiple times. I'm hoping I get some Green Mountain-like big spud onions, but this multiple-bunching characteristic could be useful. Will need to see how it develops over summer. I certain...
