I was looking for a player that was as powerful and flexible, but with a more open API. I finally gave up on searching, but when I decided to do a project in NodeJS I found this old library. The readme states that VLC has an HTTP API! So long story short, I did some research and am in the process of writing a NodeJS VLC library.
