More on e-reading… | Anna VanBuskirk

https://vanbuskirkam.wordpress.com/2012/03/02/more-on-e-reading

Just another WordPress.com site. More on e-reading…. I believe that the key to deep reading is reading with a. I have long been a fan of the creature features on National Geographic. I like how they read like books and not just a list of facts. An example is the African Elephant: When you think elephant, you probably think trunk. An adult African elephant’s trunk is about seven feet (two meters) long! The online reading for Young Explorers is new to me and all I can say is thank you! March 2, 2012. I wan...

Independent Reading | Anna VanBuskirk

https://vanbuskirkam.wordpress.com/2012/03/26/independent-reading

Just another WordPress.com site. Independent reading is self-selected reading that students do independently in or out of school, with or without accompanying instruction. While it should be a vital component of a quality reading program, it should not be the entire reading program. It has to be a planned and structured time that is a part of students’ daily literary experiences and students must be accountable for their independent reading time (Moss&Young, 2010). The two key components of an independen...

Final Reflection | Anna VanBuskirk

https://vanbuskirkam.wordpress.com/final-reflection

Just another WordPress.com site. Imagine that you had to push a button every time you wanted a spark plug to fire. Imagine that the car would only go a couple of miles per hour or that it stalled unpredictably every few moments. You would very likely choose not to drive at all. So I began to wonder: how do I change this for students who hate to read because they struggle? Amalgamation is my new vocabulary word of the year! As I mentioned before, I never gave much thought to just how hard it works and all...

Vocabulary/Beck May 26th | Michael Lemke

May 25, 2010 at 9:35 pm Posted in Uncategorized. 1 Comment ». Feed for comments on this post. Michael, I loved the way vocabulary was taught in this study. It made sende and seems doable for students of all ages. I hope to implement this kind of vocabulary study after read aloud time next year in my classroom. Hopefully it will make an impact on the vocabulary development of our students verbally and within the context of print. I wonder if this would be a good K-5 strategy for our school?

June 12, 2010 at 1:09 am Posted in Uncategorized. June 9, 2010 at 1:44 am Posted in Uncategorized. I don’t know if the thought of spending an hour of tutoring a child in fluency has ever crossed my mind. While I know it is one of the “big 5” in reading and have incorporated fluency in my lessons regualry, I have never commited that much intentional time to it. I wonder now how much my former students have missed out on? The Construction Integration Model. June 5, 2010 at 4:07 am Posted in Uncategorized.

Just another WordPress.com site. May 26 Reflection Beck and McKeown. Daneman and Carpenter (1990) for June 2 →. June 2 Reflection Hart and Risley. June 2, 2010. This was a study conducted by Hart and Risley using 42 American families in a range of SES groups from high to middle to low living in very poor to affluent neighborhoods. They looked for what was alike about all the families and searched for what made them different. Schools seem to be preparing everyone to go to college. Is that our job? This e...

Daneman and Carpenter (1980) studied working memory in college students. In their test they had college students read a number of sentences and try and recall the word at the end of each sentence, as well as a few other tasks involving recall. Anna VanBuskirk | Just another WordPress.com site

Just another WordPress.com site. Haiti is a beautiful country that hides a lot of hunger, pain, filth, and political strife. I was blown away by the poverty and the people…especially the children. So many brown eyes, dirty hands and feet, and sweet little voices singing back in the English we taught them. It was a beautiful experience and SO HARD to leave! So much that needs to be done there! She put it on today for this pic but I am going to have her wear it all day tomorrow. Sophia is all ready for the VP debate tomorrow night! I think she could even win over a few votes on the campaign trail too! I can't imagine a cuter Wee-publican anywhere else! Vote for Palin and help Sophia in her first campaign! For Sale. SOLD! Posted by Kristine Van Buskirk at 5:46 PM. Friday, June 10, 2011. Our house sold under 2 weeks! We need to be out by July 15th! That's coming WAY too fast! The fifth person to see our house, the first person the day of our open house, made the offer we wanted. It's very exciting! It was a standard sale, which was a plus too. If only finding a house would be so simple. I thought "house hunting" was supposed to be the FUN part. So far, it's only depressing. :). Back in the Game? We traveled...
