Viking boats - The Torridon Project - a 15ft boat was destined for Loch Torridon

Probably my favourite project to date - possibly because there was no frantic deadline - this 15ft boat was destined for Loch Torridon, where she will be used by a family during their holidays. She has the sections of the 18ft sjekte, Florence Oliver, but at 3ft shorter her beam/length ratio is greater, and I filled out the amidships section to give her a little more initial stability. Gig Restored

The result six months later more than justified the Marquess s decision, and with mostly new joggled oak ribs and a just couple of strakes of rare Honduras mahogany (sourced at some expense from John Moody in Devon) the gig finally went afloat again in June on his lordship s lake, to the accompanying cheers of estate workers and family. Felicity John, the first 18ft sjekte I built nine years ago, leaves for her new home on the East Coast. The 15ft sjekte awaiting delivery. Ian Oughtred s Guillemot timbered out. The Guillemot plans were stretch to a little over 12ft and make for a shapely hull, slippery under oar and sail. Guillemot, Iain s little 11ft 6in dinghy, but built traditionally and stretched to a more useable 12ft. Classic Boat s Tippy tender, with a detachable carrying locker which simply bolts on and off when needed.

Faering Project

Iain Oughtred drew this 15ft faering from extensive research in Norway. Woodfish is basically a traditionally constructed version of his plywood Elf, but redrawn for solid timber, larch in this case. She is his 100th design. The commission was for an industrial archaeologist from Sussex, to be used on the East Coast rivers to teach his children to row and sail. She carries a balanced lug rig, and is rowed the traditional way using kabes for oarlocks and distinctive faering oars, held in place by rope...
