Ocracoke Island Journal

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Friday, August 14, 2015. Pat Garber has written a chapter in her book, Ocracoke Wild. About mosquitoes. I found these statistics fascinating: "These tiny creatures weigh so little that 25,000 would be required to make an ounce. They are capable of flying 30 miles per hour, beating their wings 400 to 600 times per second.". Photo from the Ocracoke Current. Or in this 2013 article by Connie Leinbach in the Island Free Press. Ocracoke Island Journal: 06/01/2015 - 07/01/2015

http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Last week I introduced OcracokeNavigator.com. A free, comprehensive and interactive Ocracoke Island mobile web app for use on your smart phone, tablet, or laptop browser. Now you can listen to the audio tours on your device even if you do not have a smart phone, or when no Internet service is available. This month's Ocracoke Newsletter relates the story of the prohibition-era rum runner Messenger of Peace. Monday, June 29, 2015. I play p...

Ocracoke Island Journal: Clamming

http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2015/08/clamming.html

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Every now and then I mention clamming in this blog, but I seldom take any photos when I am out in the Sound. Earlier this week I took friends out to rake a few clams. Erin Jones took these pictures. Back home we opened the clams, topped them with bacon and Parmeseon cheese. And broiled them for about 15 - 20 minutes. When I brought them to the table, they didn't last long! Is that your boat back in the water, Phillip? What's New at V...

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Following are several little-known facts about the Ocracoke Lighthouse. Photo by Eakin Howard. 1794Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, proposes "erecting a light-house on Occracock island, or elsewhere, near the entrance of Occracock inlet.". 1798A wooden lighthouse is built on nearby Shell Castle Island (it is destroyed by lightning in 1818). 1860New lantern is installed. 1867Lard oil replaces whale oil as lamp fuel. Ocracoke Island Journal: 07/01/2015 - 08/01/2015

http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Friday, July 31, 2015. Illustrating one theory of how wild ponies arrived on Ocracoke, Jean Day, in her 1997 book, Banker Ponies. By the 19th century as many as three hundred wild ponies roamed the island. The annual July 4th pony penning was a major event in the early 20th century. Today, the National Park Service cares for a remnant herd of "wild" ponies in a large corral about 7 miles north of Ocracoke Village. You can read more here. Is month's Ocracoke New...

Ocracoke Island Journal: Keep A-Goin'

http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2015/08/keep-goin.html

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Cousin Blanche constantly amazes me. I was sitting on her pizer a couple of days ago, and the conversation turned to the Wright Brothers and how they persevered while others were giving up on the dream of conquering the air. That reminded Blanche of a poem she had memorized decades ago. She sat across from me and recited the poem in its entirety! If you strike a thorn or rose,. If it hails or if it snows,. Taint no use to sit an' whine.

Valley Weather: June 2015

http://valleyweather.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

As Canadians we talk about the weather relentlessly, I just talk about it a little more! I hope to provide useful information to my family, friends and all those who simply enjoy talking about the weather. While I try to include information of interest from all over North America, my primary region of concern is the St. Lawrence Valley of Quebec, Ontario, and New York, as well as our neighbouring regions. This Blog is dedicated to my late father for inspiring my interest in weather. Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

Bulletins and Links to My Online Sales and eStores. Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Closing Store for Winter. I plan to spend the winter snuggled in while working on my knitting, crocheting and sewing.I hope to have some new items to sell next spring but have to admit that I desperately need clothes and want to finish some decorating so I may spend most of the time on myself. If winter breaks early like it did last year, I may be back in March or April but right now I do not plan to return until May. I hav...
