Miser Mom: May 2015
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Saturday, May 30, 2015. K-daughter's homemade baby wipes. For frugality, notice she cares not only about things that make a direct difference to her personally (cost), but also to the world around her (plastic, disposable paper). And notice also that she has totally mastered the art of adapting recipes to use what she's got on hand. I'm so proud. I've decided to make my own baby wipes! Also, I will make some to leave there for Baby A!

Miser Mom: Bleah for Beautiful Closets
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015/08/bleah-for-beautiful-closets.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Bleah for Beautiful Closets. As someone who loves-loves-loves organizing time, and space, and closets, and . . . well . . . and everything. I just want to do a rant against "Closet-Beautiful" type magazines. Because the kind of "beautiful" these closet magazines show isn't even normal, it's airbrushed and unhealthy. (Sort of like other kinds of beauty magazines, I hear, but I don't even look at those). Okay, ...

Miser Mom: What happened to the Basil Killer?
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015/07/what-happened-to-basil-killer.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. What happened to the Basil Killer? So, I can remember when I used to basically kill nearly every green thing that I breathed on. Tomato plants withered under my gaze. Basil seeds applied for asylum under the ground. Black-eyed-Susans, which everyone. Could kill, I unleashed my special powers on and watched them die under my feet. I was to dirt what King Midas was to gold; everything I touched turned to dust.

Miser Mom: What happens to the child nobody wants?
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2012/08/what-happens-to-child-nobody-wants.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. What happens to the child nobody wants? We've been in touch with C-son by telephone lately. The telephone contact is likely to continue. We'll probably try to visit him a couple of times a year. But he's not coming back to this home. What happens to a child nobody wants? It's probably worth backing up and explaining how he came into our lives in the first place. So, as I said: that's what happens to a small fr...

Miser Mom: The child who left our home
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-child-who-left-our-home.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Tuesday, July 31, 2012. The child who left our home. Yesterday, C-son left our home. I think I agree with all of them. He's a poor kid who has been through a lot. I know we were his last shot at having a family, so I felt an especial obligation to work harder than I have so far: if we'd just gotten him on the right meds, could it have worked? Which of the two social agencies actually has legal authority to admit him? And so today we be...

Miser Mom: No more smelly trash
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015/07/no-more-smelly-trash.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Monday, July 20, 2015. No more smelly trash. My buddy Andy and I were biking around a nearby neighborhood on their trash pick-up day, doing laps and trying to wear each other out. Trash pick-up day in this neighborhood is always a festival to me; the neighborhood is wealthy, and their trash is just totally amazing. I've come back to collect giant stuffed animals. Golf umbrellas. Running strollers. Shelves. Or the small garbage trucks, ...

Miser Mom: Food shopping at our Summer Camp
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2014/06/food-shopping-at-our-summer-camp.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Thursday, June 12, 2014. Food shopping at our Summer Camp. How do you figure out what food to buy? There are so many ways to get food from the field into your belly. There's the "wander through the aisles and buy whatever catches my eye" method, the "run to the grocery store for what-I-just-ran-out-of" method, the "make a list and stick with it" method, and the pantry principle method. This was a really good lesson for both boys. I usu...

Miser Mom: Paper, Plastic, Squirrels, and the F-21 washer constipation
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015/06/paper-plastic-squirrels-and-f-21-washer.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Monday, June 8, 2015. Paper, Plastic, Squirrels, and the F-21 washer constipation. Here's a little story about newspaper, plastic bags, dead squirrels, and constipated washing machines. And the story has a happy ending (except for the squirrel). To keep the paper dry and clean, but even so, every time we switch carriers I have to call up and re-request no bag. Still now, mostly, I get naked newspapers. Well, the papers do. But even des...

Miser Mom: My sons' money and their life
http://miser-mom.blogspot.com/2015/07/my-sons-money-and-their-life.html
Reflections and advice on disciplined and frugal living with my kids. Monday, July 27, 2015. My sons' money and their life. One of the reasons that I loved the book Your Money or Your Life. Just totally won me over), but the applied philosophy of the book - that "it's not just money; it's an expression of the way you live in this world" approach - well, that stuck with me. Here's a quick synopsis of how one of our recent conversations came together. First, the background. Their older sisters, who have no...
