firey: Madeline

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2012/06/madeline.html

Monday, June 11, 2012. We carry her around in a sling and she is quite content to study her surroundings or sleep. She sleeps well in particularly noisy environments like restaurants, parties, or church. At seven weeks she is expressive, smiley, and still sleeps a lot. It's hard to capture her smile on film because she gets distracted by the camera; she wants me to be looking directly at her! But trust me, she's a smiley, laughing little kicker. Happy baby! firey: Highlights from Denmark

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2011/09/highlights-from-denmark.html

Sunday, September 11, 2011. Our adventures in Denmark were limited to two places: the historical town of Roskilde and the lovely capital, Copenhagen. First and most importantly, I should tell you that danishes are delicious. The pastry, not the people. We didn't taste the people. There weren't a ton of people on the tour, so we were able to get some great shots of these incredibly ornate rooms. Here's Nick's favorite room, the library. Isn't this dining room amazing? And check out these gorgeous canals t...

firey: Our Charge

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2012/01/our-charge.html

Sunday, January 29, 2012. This image by Ferdi Rizkiyanto. Struck me, and then a poem heard at our church this morning brought it home. Our charge, as parents, as citiczens, as consumers, as beings, is to care for one another. By George Ella Lyon (from Life Prayers. Ed by E. Roberts and E. Amidon). God signs to us. And we take cover. God is fed up. All the oceans she gave us. All the acres of steep seedful forests. And we did what. Invented the Great Chain. God sees us now. And storing our grain.

Thursday, December 01, 2011. You can find our annual winter/holiday letter at our couple/wedding blog, here. Links to this post. Well, as you might recall, I took a long while to decide what to do about my last name. After my wedding. My dear friend Fr. Joel suggested (jokingly? That I try a combination name like "Kicker". Nick couldn't be convinced to change his name to something so silly, and, well, that wasn't the answer I settled on. But now, there really is a Kicker in the family! Links to this post.

firey: Highlights from Sweden

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2011/09/highlights-from-sweden.html

Sunday, September 11, 2011. Here's a pic of a full-sized Midsommar pole in Uppsala, Sweden, just to give you an idea:. Their town, Hedemora, is in central Sweden, known for the painted horses, and is generally adorable. There are many lake homes in the area as an escape for the people of Stockholm. We love traveling around small towns, to get the real flavor of a country. Iconic Swedish homes are painted rust-red (with paint made from iron ore and copper, which preserves the wood) with white or green trim.

firey: Indigenous Ainu in Hokkaido (and an Onsen)

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2008/07/indigenous-ainu-in-hokkaido-and-onsen.html

Thursday, July 24, 2008. Indigenous Ainu in Hokkaido (and an Onsen). One of my goals in traveling around Hokkaido was to learn as much as I could about the indigenous people. We've visited several Ainu museums in Asahikawa. Niikappu, Sapporo, and now Akan. Perhaps that's my intention wherever I go, so as to be respectful to the history of those here. In some ways Japan is similar to the US, particularly in relation to the native indigenous population. And the onsen had an indoor cave, several hot and col...

Sunday, September 11, 2011. Signs advise you not to drive your tractor in downtown during rush hour. The trees on Iceland (in Iceland? I can't get over the feeling that this is a marooned island forlornly floating in the middle of the cold Atlantic). Most trees in Iceland are no taller than me, probably due to the poor topsoil and harsh winds. Seriously, HOW do people survive here? And it's really true, what they say about the midnight sun. Here's midnight in Reykjavik in July. They outfitted with horses...

firey: Highlights from Norway

http://teresawithfire.blogspot.com/2011/09/highlights-from-norway.html

Sunday, September 11, 2011. This summer Nick took the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Norway as part of his studies at Hamline Law School. (I had the chance to study abroad in South Africa in 1999 and India in 2010, so I thought he should certainly take this opportunity as he finishes up his education! Here's me, fresh off the plane, with Norwegian trolls and reindeer skins. I loved these iron gates and their use of space. Many of the gates and doorways of Oslo's buildings depicted snowflakes.

Maximum Tuneage

The adventures of Park. Sunday, February 22, 2009. Do we really need shoes filled? One of the tracks on Buddy Guy's most recent album (I won't say the name because the title track is the least-best song on the record, especially when sung monotone by one's boyfriend) is a Billy Joel "We Didn't Start the Fire"-esque rundown of the names who lived, breathed and sang the blues called "Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes? I saw Buddy do that to my brother about 15 years ago in Tampa . and I didn't see it happen...

Where in the 'Ham am I? Discovering the Secrets of Birmingham up Close and Personal. Walking along I noticed this lil’ drain fish. Have you seen any in the ‘Ham? I’m sure there’s more than just this one, but this is the first time I’ve noticed. So do you know #whereintheham? This particular guy is found at the South East corner of 10th ave south and 16th street situated just in front of the UAB parking deck beside Al’s. It then got me wondering, what’s the fish there for anyway? Apparently some guy out i...
