Where There's a Road

Friday, November 20, 2009. Like 1930 that night. SoI have to apologize to my loyal and numerous readers for not blogging in a long time. Here we go, let's get this started again. So here's a quick list of what's been going on. We're getting settled well here in Canajoharie, NY. Small town life is much different than Jersey but we're digging it. We went to Michigan a few weeks ago to visit Miriam's family which was a lot of fun. We inherited a mini-van from my parents which has been helpful in moving big ...

Where There's a Road: June 2009

http://wheretheresaroad.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 28, 2009. If only i hadn't. This post is dedicated to something I've seen a lot of lately: Bad idea tattoos. Now defining bad idea tattoos can be a bit problematic since one person's trash is another person's treasure but I think this list of tattoos I've compiled should be no one's treasure. Ever. 1 Neck tattoos. These are always a bad idea. At some point you are sure to regret them and unfortunately turtlenecks will never be cool. Ever. Tuesday, June 16, 2009. The best view of new jersey i...

Where There's a Road: October 2008

http://wheretheresaroad.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 28, 2008. And it's a big, a big hard sun. Snow in Central Jersey seems to be something a bit rare in the winter months but snow in October? That's just unheard of! Election day is a week away. At this point I'm ready for it to be over with. Why not just hold the election tomorrow? Is anyone actually still undecided? Saturday, October 25, 2008. Here's comes the rain, do, do, do, do. Some pics from the trip to the farmer's market today: Enjoy! I had my mid-certification interview yesterday...

Where There's a Road: stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey...

http://wheretheresaroad.blogspot.com/2009/07/stuck-in-mud-somewhere-in-swamps-of.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey. Now I know I rag on New Jersey all the time, let's be honest who doesn't love poking fun of the Dirty Jerz? But as I reflect on our last few nights in NJ I've been thinking about the things I will miss about Jersey and here they are in no particular order (except for the first one which is the single greatest thing I will miss about NJ). Bent Spoon ice cream. The Presbyterian Church of Westfield. The Trenton Farmer's Market.

Where There's a Road: September 2008

http://wheretheresaroad.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 20, 2008. Blame it all upon my rosary. Tuesday, September 9, 2008. I was listening to NPR on my way back from the market this morning and they were interviewing a guy who is working for a company working to bring inexpensive high speed internet to third world countries. Now my first thought was "really, do they need high speed internet there, what about food, medicine, and clean drinking water first? Thursday, September 4, 2008. While you be makin it rain, i be makin it snow. Had to r...

Where There's a Road: January 2009

http://wheretheresaroad.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 30, 2009. I put on for my city. I found this photo this morning and I had to admire the cleverness of this sign. Wednesday, January 28, 2009. I just want to knit a hat for it. It snowed last night here and we got probably 3 inches. In typical NJ fashion these things happened in reaction to the snow:. A) All schools and non-essential businesses closed. B) Once the snow fell it started sleeting and is now raining and will be over 40 degrees by mid-afternoon. Friday, January 23, 2009. If you...

Hilemans at Home: February 2014

http://hilemans.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

And on the road. Friday, February 14, 2014. Must be time to blog again). I realize that I have a pattern of blogging during February snow days. It's one of the few times when I feel I have enough unscheduled time to indulge. In writing about things. Okay, maybe that's an overstatement, but I clearly have a pattern of doing this. In fact, many of the posts over the past few years are weather related. Link to the Facebook page. Link to the tracking tool. Link to the Colorado Outward Bound Facebook page.

Hilemans at Home: Summer 2015

http://hilemans.blogspot.com/2015/08/summer-2015.html

And on the road. Saturday, August 22, 2015. It has felt like a longer summer than most. That's actually a good thing. In late-June, we hosted everyone in the family to celebrate Abbie's graduation. It was great to have the clan here. I report for work on September 1, the day after we get back from Michigan. The new normal? Time will tell, but I'm honestly eager to find out. Maybe this is why the summer has felt long; it's been months of preparing - practically and emotionally - for the next phase. Deb, M...

And on the road. Tuesday, July 16, 2013. And now for something completely different. Abbie had her wisdom teeth removed yesterday. It was hard not to think about Nate. I remember that he was so giddy in recovery that nurse started giggling too. I had to tell him to stop trying to talk with gauze in his mouth, so he tried to write his questions and comments on post it notes. I'm glad to have this in the rear view mirror. Hilemans at Home: July 2011

http://hilemans.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

And on the road. Friday, July 1, 2011. The phone rang and the messages continued for the next several minutes before Kim had had enough. We handed him a pad and a pen instead. His surgery went well. The nurse who escorted me to him from the waiting room after the procedure seemed almost upbeat. She never said so, but I got the sense that she had been charmed a bit by him. When I first saw him, he was still emerging from the sedative, but he spoke right away; "That was wild," is what I remember. On the ri...

31 Before 31 List. 30 Before 30 List. Read Harder Challenge 2015. Tuesday, October 22, 2013. It was on a day, not too far ago, that I fell down one of those infamous Internet rabbit holes. Through a series of twists and turns, I found myself looking at a defense of kneading bread. Having tried no-knead bread making with so-so success, I was curious as to how different a kneaded bread could be. I printed the recipe, ensured I had the needed ingredients (more on that in a sentence) and got started. Kneadin...

Last weekend was IndyPopCon. Yours truly was there representing Lonely Robot Comics, and I wrote up a blog entry about the show. Check it out here. If you happen to have visited this page in the past few days, you may have noticed that my news updater threw up all over itself. As such, I've just done away with it. This will become abundantly obvious once I put up my next portfolio update, but it should be noted that I've recently done some flatting for Emilio Lopez and Khary Randolph's book.
