Monday, 18 May 2015. In about 15 days I will be landing in Kigali, Rwanda. To embark on my Summer Placement with Gikondo Presbyterian Church and Tearfund Rwanda. As well as completing my second year as an undergraduate student I’ve been spending the past weeks in a frenzy of organizing, receiving any number of vaccinations, packing, reading up on Rwanda, seeing friends and family, eating all my favourite foods, and mentally preparing myself for the exciting time ahead. Difficulties in dealing with the pa...

Tuesday, 23 October 2012. Are we really listening? Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who can help us hear Jesus? It probably sounds like another one of those ideals that tries to stretch pop culture over a Christian frame. But please bear with me. I simply want to reflect on the main theme of the story, as I see it relating to a belief in Jesus. HHAW gets right to the modernist worldview from the start by setting out the notion that things and people only exist if we can see them, hear them, and touch them. How m...

Wednesday, 29 July 2015. Words, inadequate at best, impossible at worst. It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessons. But it is never gone.". Soldiers and militia attacked the church where the Tutsis sheltered. Five thousand people lost their lives as violent atrocities almost too difficult to speak of took place. As I stood amongst the remnants of clothes and shoes belonging to t...

Tuesday, 31 January 2012. Mr Benn and the coffee creme. Life is like a bag of revels'. Forrest Gump's mother was wrong - life is not like a box of chocolates, because normally they have a 'map' so you can see what each chocolate is. It would be more accurate to say 'life is like a bag of revels'. Whatever way you prefer to think of it, I reckon it's fair to say that life can certainly be full of 'little surprises'. As a result I am no stranger to the occasional 'surprise' along the way. He leaves the sho...

Friday, 12 June 2015. Water, water everywhere? Imagine getting up tomorrow and going to the kitchen sink for a glass of water. only nothing comes out. You shuffle up to the bathroom sink thinking, "There must be something wrong with the taps," but there is no water is flowing from there either. After trying all of the taps in your house, you realise YOU DON'T HAVE WATER! What would you do? Call the water company? You don't have a water company. Go to the shop? Shops don't carry clean water. Study after s...

Monday, 22 June 2015. Not giving blood saves lives. I'm a big fan of giving blood, normally. Giving blood saves lives, it really does, and if I can encourage any of you to go and donate. Either blood, or platelets, please please do! It doesn't take long, is not as scary as you might think, and you get free tea and biscuits when you're done! So voluntarily giving blood is, as I said, really important. That is, it is at home, in Northern Ireland! Mosquitos - Africa's most deadly killer? I have been lucky s...

Thursday, 20 December 2012. Been practicing making these at WhY-F Nom Nom Nom! Posted by jonathan newell. Posted by jonathan newell. Monday, 17 December 2012. Whatever with the past has gone, the best is always yet to come. Posted by jonathan newell. Thursday, 13 December 2012. This is our time, this is our place. I don’t normally bother with commenting on any ‘affairs of the state’ it’s usually a depressingly predictable pattern of events here in Northern Ireland anyway. Reports at the scene, said one s...

Patience = Love = Patience = Love | VLR belfast

Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Patience = Love = Patience = Love. Rwanda has taught me how to be patient. To know that when a waiter says your food will be ready in two minutes, he really means twenty. To smile and relax when a friend is an hour, or so, late, because you know they really had the best of intentions for being there on time. This new found patience has calmed me, and it has given me the time to realise that there are more important things in life. I have also learnt what true kindness is. From ...

'The Moto' | VLR belfast

Saturday, 13 June 2015. I have never been on a motorcycle in my life. Fact. That said, up until a few years ago before I damaged my neck, I was always a keen cyclist. So I guess that it is no surprise really that I have discovered a new favourite means of transport. 'The Moto'. Everywhere you go in Rwanda there are any number of 'Moto' drivers ready to take you wherever you need to go. Just remember to jump on from the left, to avoid nasty exhaust burns, and let the driver do the rest! So don't just sit ...
