For many years David have offered guitar making tuition from his own workshop for players who wish to make there own guitar or for those who wish to pursue guitar making as a full time profession. For many people making their own guitar is a long held ambition, an opportunity to learn about the woods and construction methods resulting in a unique and personal instrument that the player knows intimately. This can give a completely new dimension to a players’ relationship with their guitar.

Guitars are hand finished with French polish. Options include Brazilian rosewood for the back and ribs and western red cedar for the soundboard. David aims to produce a guitar that has balance and clarity with an incisive, strong treble and a firm powerful bass response. These guitars have volume but not at the expense of tonality and they have considerable ‘cut’ and projection. Body length 490 mm. Width at lower bout 366 mm. Width at waist 248 mm. http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Monday, 12 August 2013. Long time no blog. Well, its been a while, but in my defence I have been rather busy. I am just packing two guitars to go to America and a third guitar (that's the rosette above) has just arrived safely in Beijing. Four weeks ago saw 2 guitars off to Japan. I've run out of packing materials and now I just want to get on with making guitars and enjoying the summer with my family. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Long time no blog.
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker: May 2015
http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Wednesday, 13 May 2015. This guitar is a copy of a J.G. Stauffer from the first half of the 19th century. This guitar, with an adjustable neck, extended floating fingerboard and 6-aside tuners, was an instrument that Stauffer developed in conjunction with the virtuoso guitarist Luigi Legnani. Above; a detail of the raised fingerboard on this guitar. This style of tuner adds weight to the neck and the buttons are quite close together, but this is someth...
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker: July 2015
http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Tuesday, 7 July 2015. I seem to feature a lot of 19th century guitars on this blog: here is another example. This was a recent restoration commission; the neck had pulled forward significantly resulting in an unplayable action. This is a common problem encountered on old guitars. The job of realigning the neck is simple, in theory at least. A small amount of wood is removed from the heel to adjust the overall neck/body geometry and the action and a...

David Whiteman, Guitar Maker: Antonio Torres 1888 SE122
http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2014/10/antonio-torres-1888-se122.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Saturday, 18 October 2014. Antonio Torres 1888 SE122. Every so often a guitar turns up in the workshop that you can't get out of your head. This guitar by Antonio Torres is one of those guitars. Startling and unnerving maybe but not unique in Torres work; a Torres guitar owned by Tarrega, SE114 (also from 1888) exhibits skewed grain, as does SE99. This guitar is due to be auctioned at Bromptons. Bromptons Auctioneers. David Whiteman Guitars. Well I don...
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker: August 2014
http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Friday, 1 August 2014. Vuida de Manuel Ramirez restoration. This is a small guitar, with a scale length of 634mm and was perhaps intended as a 'ladies' guitar. The back and sides are of Indian rosewood which was unusual for this time. The guitar is simply and in places roughly built, but in spite of this has survived very well; the damage can be attributed to careless owners, rather than poor workmanship. The inside of the guitar prior to restoration).

http://whitemanguitars.blogspot.com/2015/01/1888-torres-se122-copy-new-guitars-part.html
David Whiteman, Guitar Maker. News from my workshop. Monday, 12 January 2015. 1888 Torres SE122 copy (New guitars Part I). The tuners I used on this guitar are Rubners with plain brass plates and small round buttons and although different from the originals,I think they suit the guitar well. I currently putting together another copy of this guitar and I am keen to make a comparison. Labels: Antonio de Torres. Bromptons Auctioneers. David Whiteman Guitars. Munu in Gulu
Friday, March 9, 2012. Fortunately, back in 2005 I was introduced to The Invisible Children ( The Rough Cut -2003. First and foremost, my aim is to not completely discredit the effort of Invisible Children (IC) organization. After all, their motivations have absolutely created awareness, and because of this, discourse has globally circulated. Isn’t that what life is about, in an existential aspect? It’s now 2012, and Museveni is still calling the shots (literally and figuratively) in Uganda. On personal ...
