Rural life in eastern Ontario. Laquo; Sunday Snapshot: Goldfinch at Sunflower. Sunday Snapshot: Five of a Kind. August 10, 2015 by barefootheart. Speaking of Better Boy, Early Girl only just beat out the boy next door for top honours. The first Better Boy tomato will be ripe in another day or two. Better Boy tomaotes have been around for about 50 years, and reportedly hold a Guinness record for most fruit produced on a single plant. I also have several varieties of cherry tomatoes that have already start...

An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan: February 2015
http://adknaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Yesterday some friends and I went to Port Huron to see the long-tailed ducks (formerly old squaws) on the St. Clair River in Port Huron. Last year, apparently they were there in rafts by the tens of thousands. We didn't see that many yesterday, but we did see many, many hundreds. Bridge over St. Clair River to Canada. Here's what the scene was like:. Male long-tailed duck stretching. Here's what it sounds like:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Saturday, July 19, 2014. What's Bloomin' at the Homestead. Last week while mowing the yard, I found a tiny purple blob where I had planted some new prairies flowers this spring. I was very excited - must go get a photo of i! Well, it took a while, but yesterday when I got home from work I decided to grab the camera and shoot it.and whatever else was blooming, for right now the grass land flowers are starting their seasonal show. And the horsemint is at its prime!
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan: April 2015
http://adknaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Monday, April 20, 2015. Early Spring Flowers at Nan Weston. We had a spate of warm (to me "hot") weather at the end of last week - in the 70s! This meant the woodland flowers should be popping. So Sunday morning I headed out to Nan Weston preserve to see what might be up. I made this trip primarily as recon for a group we are taking out there on Tuesday. Most of the rue anemone were also closed when I arrived. By the time I left, most were open. The blue cohosh was j...

http://veggiegardenblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/peppers-planted.html
Friday, February 21, 2014. I seeded my peppers today along with a few other things. Last year I planted peppers on Feb 14, this year I decided to hold off one more week due to the whole polar vortex nonsense. Granny. Graciously supplied me with the majority of my bell pepper seeds this year. With so many varieties I will be doing a mini trial to see what grows best. Pepper varieties this year will include:. Quadrato Giallo D'Asti (Yellow). Quadrato Tosso D'Asti (Red). Happy Yummy Sweet (Orange). It looks...

Tuesday, July 8, 2014. In this bed I am growing Granny's. Peppers. Late last year I was admiring Granny's beautiful peppers and I had asked if they tasted as good as greenhouse peppers and that I had never had any luck growing sweet peppers. Before I knew it I had five varieties of peppers arrive in the mail. To return the favor I sent her charentais melon,. Diplomat F1 Broccoli, which I started from seed this year. I think normally I would have already picked broccoli. Must be due to the cold sp...This ...

Friday, October 19, 2012. Fall has arrived so it is garlic time again. This year I am planting at the proper time as appose to last year when I planted in late December, tis tis. I decided to finally give in and order some interesting varieties. It can be kind of expensive to order garlic so normally I would just replanted from the current years crop. I put in 6 varieties this year which I will show below. Then the remaining area was planted with my standby variety that has monster sized cloves. Our Plot...

Roche Fleurie Garden: May 2015
http://rochefleuriegarden.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Diary of a Frugal Gardener. F du j.- July. Fleurs du jour - June. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Unwlecome in the Cold Frame. In our climate, cold frames are useful, but not as much as they are in places with milder climates. If they are in the sun, you cannot leave plants in them in winter, because temperatures in the frames can fluctuate enormously. They stay buried in ice and snow for most of the winter. However they are especially handy in spring. Links to this post. Sunday, May 24, 2015. Links to this post.

Roche Fleurie Garden: April 2015
http://rochefleuriegarden.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Diary of a Frugal Gardener. F du j.- July. Fleurs du jour - June. Friday, April 24, 2015. Ten days ago we were under snow. Now many of the flowering plants that bloggers from warmer climates have been describing in the last month have rushed into bloom here too. However, if blooms are important markers of the changing seasons, here and at this time of the year, they are not the most obvious. Links to this post. Thursday, April 16, 2015. Roche Fleurie Garden: The In & Out Game
http://rochefleuriegarden.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-in-out-game.html
Diary of a Frugal Gardener. F du j.- July. Fleurs du jour - June. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. The In and Out Game. A billion buttercups eager to leap the fence and get into the garden. Some of the weeds that get to seed themselves in the garden are sometimes welcome, for instance this OxEye Daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum). When a plant decides, like this one, to grow just in the perfect spot, it is difficult to get rid of it, even if there are a million of the very same plant just outside the fence.

Willow House Chronicles | Rural life in eastern Ontario
Rural life in eastern Ontario. August 10, 2015 by barefootheart. The winner of this year’s ‘First Tomato of the Year’ title is Early Girl, above. This spring, in a fit of laziness, I didn’t bother to start any tomato seedlings myself, and was thus restricted to the more limited selection available at nurseries. Early Girl is a popular variety with home gardeners, producing nicely shaped, medium-sized, bright red globes in a short planting season. I also have several varieties of cherry tomatoes that have...
