Other fiber arts – Yarnstead

Growing a creative life: fiber arts, gardening, food. Category: Other fiber arts. The light and the dark. January 7, 2017. January 7, 2017. After more trial and error, I made a lumpy but continuous strand of yarn, and I felt like I could do magic. I went to a workshop on using hand spindles, and that helped so much! Mostly though, I think I was afraid to be too still, to open myself to whatever feelings would be waiting in that inner quiet. If I didn’t go there, maybe the messiness of adjusting...Good po...

Growing a creative life: fiber arts, gardening, food. The light and the dark. January 7, 2017. January 7, 2017. After more trial and error, I made a lumpy but continuous strand of yarn, and I felt like I could do magic. I went to a workshop on using hand spindles, and that helped so much! More spindles, a wheel, lots of spinning books, and a few wheel spinning workshops followed over the next years. I’ve never had a lot of time to devote to it but treasured it all the same. Mostly though, I think I was a...

Adventures in wool dyeing – Yarnstead
https://myyarnstead.com/2011/10/21/adventures-in-wool-dyeing
Growing a creative life: fiber arts, gardening, food. Adventures in wool dyeing. October 21, 2011. October 15, 2016. Up to this point, my dyeing yarn or fiber has been spontaneous rather than planned. I have a 3-quart slow cooker and a few utensils that I keep just for the job. The roving above was dyed this summer in two batches, each batch with 2 colors of Kool-aid. I deliberately didn’t mix the Kool-aid much and crowded a lot of roving into the pot. The result? I recently decided to try natural dyeing.

Growing a creative life: fiber arts, gardening, food. Chex mix and podcasts: fuel for a creative holiday season. December 17, 2016. Snow is falling again right now, and I’m grateful for a chance to regroup and recharge indoors after a busy summer and fall. For starters, homemade Chex mix is WAY better than store-bought, especially if made from this recipe. For company on your snowy commute or as you busily prepare holiday treats or even just do your housecleaning, may I suggest some podcasts? On October ...

Come-as-you-are yarn: mindless spinning – Yarnstead
https://myyarnstead.com/2016/03/28/come-as-you-are-yarn-mindless-spinning
Growing a creative life: fiber arts, gardening, food. Come-as-you-are yarn: mindless spinning. March 28, 2016. May 31, 2016. Seriously, don’t fill your bobbin this full. Most spinners and spinning books will tell of the wisdom of planning and sampling to help you make the yarn you want. This is smart because it’s frustrating to end up with a yarn that’s the wrong thickness for the project you hope to make or that isn’t nearly enough yardage. So don’t spin like me.
