Wood Chuck's Workshop

My exploits as a relative novice at fine wood working. Thursday, April 2, 2015. My cousin asked me to make an arbor for her wedding. It was going to be painted so that meant I could build the arbor from standard construction lumber. I ripped the pieces down on the table saw to remove the rounded edged on the 2x4's. I designed the arbor with "4x4" legs so after I had the 2x4 cleaned up it was time to glue the legs. The legs were notched out for the cross bars to create the end assemblies. As I was cleanin...

Wood Chuck's Workshop: Tool Handles

http://www.woodchucksworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/01/tool-handles.html

My exploits as a relative novice at fine wood working. Saturday, January 24, 2015. As I was cleaning in the shop recently I found some old files and rasp that were NY grandpa's. I had forgot I had them. Only one of them had a handle. I need a simple lathe project to get my fix so I used some scrap and turned some handles. Files are a lot nicer to use when they have a handle. Oak handle on top and a maple handle on bottom.too. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Birds Eye Maple Fountain Pens.

Wood Chuck's Workshop: February 2014

http://www.woodchucksworkshop.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

My exploits as a relative novice at fine wood working. Tuesday, February 25, 2014. More pens and videos. I've been turning some more pens again when I don't have a lot of shop time. I've also been making some videos while in the shop. One of the recent pens I made was made from purple heart. Purple heart is brown after cutting or sanding, the purple will return on its own with time and exposure to sunlight. But it's possible to speed this process up by heating the wood. Here the color change is noticeable.

Wood Chuck's Workshop: December 2014

http://www.woodchucksworkshop.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

My exploits as a relative novice at fine wood working. Friday, December 26, 2014. I watched Steve Ramsey with Wood Working for Mere Mortals. Make a game called Quoridor. It looked like a fun game to play. I think games make good gifts, and most the time fairly easy to make. I wanted to make a few copies of the Quoridor game. After all the grooves were cut I trimmed the their final sizes. Next I used some solid maple to make a frame around the plywood fields. I then turned some game pieces. Last night aft...

Favorite Tool of the Week: Old Wooden Jack Plane - Billy's Little Bench

http://www.billyslittlebench.com/blog/favorite-tool-of-the-week-old-wooden-jack-plane

Favorite Tool of the Week: Old Wooden Jack Plane. I purchased this plane for $30 a few years ago and my only regret was not getting it up and running the day I bought it. Not that it needed much work. The plane was made by D.R. Barton and Co. in Rochester, NY. The label stamped on the blade and the plane date it to about 1874-1880, at the end of Barton's life and business. Any questions or comments feel free to ask. Thanks for stopping by.
