Adventures with Standards Based Grading

Adventures with Standards Based Grading. Thursday, February 7, 2013. Coming up with a retake policy that worked for me was VERY challenging. I had several concerns when I started thinking about it. Should a student who shows mastery on a retake be given the same grade on that standard as the student who mastered it on the first attempt? What is the benefit for a student to keep up with class and do the best they can on the assessment the first time it is given if they are given unlimited retakes? For eac...

Adventures with Standards Based Grading: Converting to a letter grade

http://adventureswithsbg.blogspot.com/2013/01/converting-to-letter-grade.html

Adventures with Standards Based Grading. Monday, January 21, 2013. Converting to a letter grade. I chose to make two requirements for each grade- a minimum across all standards and an average. See the chart below. I allow for partial points. If a student can answer all of level 2 and more than half of level 3 questions correctly, the student will score a 2.5. This system is not perfect and I will be doing some tweaking of the requirements next year but this was a good starting place.

Adventures with Standards Based Grading: January 2013

http://adventureswithsbg.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Adventures with Standards Based Grading. Tuesday, January 29, 2013. I have chosen to only include summative assessments in my gradebook. This was a big decision for me. I grappled with the question “If homework and other formative assessments aren’t graded, what is the motivation for students to complete or try their best on the assignment? Choosing to NOT have formative assessments as part of the grade gets to the root of the question, “what should a grade mean? 8212;occur during the learning process an...

Adventures with Standards Based Grading: Homework- to grade or not to grade

http://adventureswithsbg.blogspot.com/2013/02/homework-to-grade-or-not-to-grade.html

Adventures with Standards Based Grading. Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Homework- to grade or not to grade. There is a lot of debate out there on this issue. The BEST arguments for NOT grading homework can be found here at Shawn Connely’s Think Thank Thunk blog. He does an AMAZING job explaining why we as teachers should stop grading homework. I highly recommend reading it. Here is another blog post on whether grading homework is a waste of time. So what do I do if a student does not do their homework?

Adventures with Standards Based Grading: My Active Grade Gradebook

http://adventureswithsbg.blogspot.com/2013/02/active-grade-gradebook.html

Adventures with Standards Based Grading. Tuesday, February 5, 2013. My Active Grade Gradebook. I use Active Grade. For grade reporting. Here is a Great 2-minute video called Introduction to Active Grade and SBG. Here is a snapshot of what second quarter looked like. You don’t see any red, because students have opportunities to retake the assessments, and all students met the minimum requirement of a level 2 or higher bringing them into the yellow zone. Love and food for the nom-violent revolution. Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Help Me Name This St. Germain and Strawberries Drink. I had a craving for St. Germain this evening. Something sweet with a little sour and maybe herbal. So I pulled a strawberry out of the fridge, some mint from the garden and created this refreshing summer time drink. Drink it on the porch at sunset. I went through a list of creative names for this drink. The Drunken Garden Teacher keeps playing through my mind but that's long. Of co...

Thoughts from a tour guide, architect, mom, writer, and packing ninja. Oh, Pope Francis, can you say more things like that? April 29, 2015. Http:/ www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2015/04/29/403072619/pope-francis-calls-gender-pay-gap-a-pure-scandal. Is Pope Francis the Pope I’ve always dreamed would come along? As a life-long Catholic Feminist (that’s awkward), I’d love to say yes. So far I’d say maybe. But today he certainly won points with me and possibly humanity in general. So go, post your salary on th...
