Friday, March 16, 2012. This time of year, Dungeness crab is for sale, but it's past its prime. The meat isn't as sweet as it is in December and January, so eating it plain is always a disappointment. But my friend Emily had a terrific idea: bathe the crab in Singaporean chili sauce. A frequent traveler to Southeast Asia, she has enjoyed it many times and wanted to try the recipe with our local species. Adapted from various recipes by Emily Friedman and Mandy Erickson. 8 garlic cloves, minced. 1-2 tbsp&#...

Mandy Erickson: Green Tea Everything

http://bayareafoodblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/green-tea-everything.html

Tuesday, July 19, 2011. When Alex and I were walking around Tokyo and Kyoto, we were almost always within sight of a vending machine. These machines were quite welcome, because it's humid and warm there, and we were usually in need of a drink. I soon latched on to my favorite thirst quencher: iced green tea, unsweetened. I found it the ideal refresher, with just enough stimulant to perk up a caffeine wuss like me. Posted by Mandy Erickson. July 19, 2011 at 5:11 PM. I think you might like Matcha Green Tea...

Mandy Erickson: A Carrot of Any Color

http://bayareafoodblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/carrot-of-any-color.html

Tuesday, May 31, 2011. A Carrot of Any Color. I planted carrots in February, in a bed containing a few rocks. Rocks matter in carrot cultivation, because if the root hits one as it's growing downward, it'll break into two or three parts rather than remain one solid carrot whole. So when I started pulling them up this weekend, I expected to find such shattered roots, some of them twisting around each other like carrot yoga. It's so easy, I never bother to open the book and follow the recipe. Burrata with ...

Mandy Erickson: The Case of the Missing Duck Bones

http://bayareafoodblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/case-of-missing-duck-bones.html

Monday, September 12, 2011. The Case of the Missing Duck Bones. The biggest scandal in the neighborhood of my youth concerned a duck carcass. My sister Anna, then a teenager, had prepared canard a l’orange for a potluck held at the home of a neighbor: the dish was exquisite, and with it she cemented her reputation as the finest cook on the block. While our household carried the gastronomical torch (prompting one visitor to remark, the morning before a party, "The Ericksons are cooking, and all is well wi...

Mandy Erickson: A Gutsy Guy, a Pile of Pork, and Lots of Salt

http://bayareafoodblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/gutsy-guy-pile-of-pork-and-lots-of-salt.html

Tuesday, June 7, 2011. A Gutsy Guy, a Pile of Pork, and Lots of Salt. My guest blogger, Gene Heller, describes how he made his own guanciale and pancetta. We tasted his pancetta, in a lovely dish of linguine carbonara, and it was sublime. This past Christmas a friend of mine gave me a copy of Michael Ruhlman’s. For a few weeks after she gave me the book I spent some happy hours reading about pancetta and thinking up reasons not to try making it: What if the Big One hits while I’m aging the pancetta?

Bay Area Food Blog | Food with A Few Sides

Bay Area Food Blog. Food with A Few Sides. February 7, 2013. Bay Area Food Blog. Sorry this is late but think of it as a early summer entertaining post and ignore the Superbowl stuff. Every Superbowl, we go over to our friends Amber and Lisa’s to watch the game. While other people say that the Superbowl is an excuse to watch commercials, I say it’s an excuse to eat things with your hands. So this year we are putting together a slider bar for the festivities. Here are the components. January 28, 2013.

Bay Area Food Fan's Blog. Just another Foodie with a keyboard. Sopa, perfected finally! My mother in law often makes a dish whenever myself and my wife go and visit her and it has become one of my most loved dishes. She calls it sopa or simply fideo and when I hear those words, I instantly begin to salivate in anticipation! It is a very simple recipe and pairs well with a variety of other dishes, but it is in the preparation where it can easily be ruined. After trying several times, I finally got it!

I'm Hungry: Foodie Reviews in the SF Bay Area

I'm Hungry: Foodie Reviews in the SF Bay Area. Monday, December 18, 2006. RESTAURANT TYPE = French. LOCATION: chain (Menlo Park, Santana Row). RATING: 3.5-4 stars (good). Good news is that they drastically revamped their menu in 2006! Other things to note:. Reservations recommended. Santana Row parking is more difficult on the weekends. For special days like Valentines, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve they have special holiday menus for which reservations are highly recommended if not required. Looks li...
