The Mother Road Route 66
The Mother Road Route 66. Traveling the Main Street of America 2009. Days 18 - 22.June 16 - 20, 2009. We left LA and took a side trip to Yuma, AZ to see my aunt and uncle. I didn't get to spend much time with them at all so I decided that I will just have to go back! To see a few pictures on the way home. I've planned this trip for 10 years and now I can check it off my bucket list. Would I do it again? Day 17, June 15, 2009. Day 16.June 14, 2009. Day 15.June 13, 2009. Day 14.June 12, 2009. Arizona Route 66
June 2009 Road Trip. A little bit of greenery before crossing the Colorado River and enter the first town in California, Needles. May I help you? The town was named for Olive Oatman. To read the full story. The Oatman Hotel where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard honeymooned. They were doing renovations so it was closed off when we were there. The burros could do whatever they wanted to do. After miles of driving and thinking we were at the end of the earth we suddenly came upon the town of Oatman. The O...

California Route 66
June 2009 Road Trip. We even went by the home of Nicole Brown Simpson. This is a pic of the infamous gate where she was murdered. There were painters there when I stopped by and I briefly thought of asking them if I could go inside but it just didn't feel right to do that. Now if it had been Elvis' house? This was Lucy and Desi's home and where she spent most of her years. I saw this one, too, after getting my map. 1174 Hillcrest located in Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills. What's so special? We also d...

Illinois Route 66
June 2009 Road Trip. Just before crossing into Missouri. Click here. To take the short cut to get there. This was on the side of the road in southern Illinois. I remember seeing these years ago. The ramps near an old 'filling station' were left here a long time ago. They are embedded in the side of the tree trunk. The ramps were here first and the tree grew up between them. I do believe they've been sittin' a while. And another dead end. Nathan with an Illinois shield and fighting the wind. The Lincoln D...

Kansas Route 66
June 2009 Road Trip. After a very scenic 13 miles and I don't think we are in Kansas anymore. We ate lunch at this very good little place in Baxter Springs, Kansas. It occupies the former bank building that was once robbed by Jesse James in 1876. A sign for a really neat bridge. Galena, first town in Kansas and we see 'Tow Tater' which was the inspiration for 'Tow Mater' in the movie, Cars. It runs and looks just as it did when the moviemakers saw it. Missouri Route 66
June 2009 Road Trip. A still very much in business drive-in theater. There were ruins of many more along the way. This is a replica of an old gas station that was built to honor the builder's wife in Paris Springs, MO. There are many, many vacant and abandoned structures that were once motels, gas stations, and stores. Long gone, nothing but ghosts there now. A very nice leisurely drive in western Missouri and I have the road to myself for now. And another mural. They certainly were plentiful. Rain turne...

New Mexico Route 66
New Mexico Route 66. June 2009 Road Trip. An old advertisement for the El Rancho Hotel miles down the road. Te of the Cliff Dwelling Trading Post. Leaving Gallup, New Mexico. Inside the El Rancho. He's not always this grumpy looking. He thinks of it as a challenge to see how long he can go and not smile in a picture. Outside the El Rancho. The next morning and checking out. Richard Boone room down the hall. Amazingly we see Canadian Guy again checking into the same hotel. A lot of neon in this town too.
