For our photo shoot, we raced the setting sun to Vermillion Lighthouse in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Sunday, August 3, 2014. When Ropes invited me try my hand at helping build a local Guatemalan’s house, how could I say no? Cashing in my many credit card churned points (my secret to flying for free), I threw my life into my 60L pack and headed to San Marcos La Laguna. It is one of many small Mayan villages surrounding Lake Atitlan, “the world’s most beautiful lake” believed by writer Aldous Huxley. The breathtaking view from our volunteer house. Layering adobe blocks is a bit like making a muddy cake.

The exhaustion of teaching twenty-five fifth graders each week at Outdoor Science School is balanced by the joy of seeing kids explore nature.
