Water Issues | Hoppy Thoughts

Crooked Tail Brewery Blog. A new brew….sort of. Getting the old competitive juices flowing. →. Sometimes you just need to learn things the hard way. We’ve been going through a string of bad batches lately. Several of our beers had an aftertaste that should not be present in the beer. Some, like the RyePA, were still drinkable (and actually pretty good). Others, like the porter and brown ale, really were unpleasant. Moral of the story: Pay attention to your water! On February 4, 2013 in Homebrewing. You a...

Crooked Tail Brewery Blog. Nerding Out…. →. Getting the old competitive juices flowing. So I brewed the latest variation of our new red rye on Saturday morning. It went well, and aroma of the rye smelled absolutely fantastic. When I asked Erin, she said without hesitation “BPA.” The BPA is our Belgian-American pale ale, which I’ve dubbed. Perfect for this competition. Plus, I have the ingredients on hand. I was planning to brew a batch. My issue is I need to get this one going now. There isn&...You are c...

Crooked Tail Brewery Blog. Labor Day Weekend lived up to its name. Been a while… →. Homebrew, minus the “Home” part…. I recently bought a new fermenter to make my pipeline a bit larger. And for good reason, I seem to be brewing for events more than for myself. Two batches are sitting for next week (Erin’s birthday weekend upstate). Those are the BPA and new IPA. Those will be racked for clearing this week, and kegged next week. On September 24, 2012 in Homebrewing. Labor Day Weekend lived up to its name.

Crooked Tail Brewery Blog. Been a while…. Water Issues →. A new brew….sort of. Last summer I came across a recipe that piqued my interest. It was very simple, but looked tasty. It was Ken Lenard’s Memory Lapse Pale Ale. I’ve tried some of Ken’s recipes before. I like how he keeps things relatively simple. This beer looked almost like a Sam Adams Boston Lager type of brew. A simple malt bill with American Hallertau descendant hops. On January 24, 2013 in Homebrewing. Been a while…. Water Issues →. I’...

Monday, July 29, 2013. I cannot believe that I have not posted in, what appears to be, about 5 years. What have I been doing? So, let's give it another go. What brought me back? I arrived yesterday in Phoenix to attend Art Unraveled. Sorry for the blur. I wanted to post this, though, so I could give a nod to Paula Best. Posted by Betsy Harrison. Sunday, November 2, 2008. I've been tagged by the magical Megs Bisbee-Durlam. A spectacular young woman and fabulous, spirited artist. The six random facts meme.

Saturday, June 18, 2011. I've seen depth in the minds of animals typically considered "stupid" - I've seen cats and dogs smile and cry, fear and pain in the eyes of smaller friends we often take for granted, and seen bonds closer than soul mates between man and animals of all kinds. They have truly, at least for me, often filled the metaphorical heart with warmth often deeper than human family. Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Crooked Tail Brewing :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
How did craft beer become so snooty? If you've ever read a beer review, you've surely come across more than a few that sound as if they were written by a sommelier:. Brilliant crisp scent, with sweat and pecans. Amazing bready palate, laced with a touch of lilac and tarragon.". We at Crooked Tail believe beer should stick to being what it is: FUN. It is something you enjoy along with good conversation, and maybe a steak or a burger. Leave the pretentiousness to the wine drinkers.

Crooked Tail Brewery Blog. Last Sunday was the first homebrew competition I’d ever partook in. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m pretty passionate about my brewing. To have someone – especially people who are knowledgeable about beer (more so than I am) – tell me my beer sucks or isn’t all that good, would deflate my already low self-esteem. I’ll admit I went into it on Sunday expecting just that to happen. But the furthest thing from that happened. I couldn’t believe it! On April 25, 2013 in Homebrewing.
