Discussions on Latino Literature: January 2012

http://www.discussionsonlatinoliterature.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Discussions on Latino Literature. Friday, January 27, 2012. Larger Scheme of Life. From where do stereotypes originate? I kept asking myself this question as we watched the movie A Day Without A Mexican. The movie poked fun at common stereotypes white people tend to have about latino people. The movie called attention to the value people have in society as well as questioned our thinking about who we are in the larger scheme of life. How do we begin thinking about who we are? I love to hear people's stor...

Discussions on Latino Literature. Friday, March 30, 2012. Self-Identity in Dreaming in Cuban and Bodega Dreams. Pilar has a dream of returning to Cuba, to her grandmother Celia. She identifies most closely with her Grandmother – she is tied to her in a unique way, sharing memories, thoughts, layers of life. She believes she could be free in Cuba in the company of Celia – free to grow into the best of herself. Pilar is an artist. Her father, however, supports her dream of becoming a painter. But overall P...

Discussions on Latino Literature. Friday, March 16, 2012. Thoughts on Bodega Dreams. He seemed to only create trouble in Chino's life - Blanca doesn't like Sapo, Chino has to hide Sapo's drugs.etc. Sapo only seemed to make Chino's goals harder to reach, yet Chino never refuses him if he has a request. March 17, 2012 at 8:33 AM. Loving someone because they love them self seems like a weird concept to me. However, arent we drawn to people with confidence? Latino Lit Nathan Stanley. The View from Tucson, Arizona. Wednesday, April 18, 2012. The concept of machismo has administered itself as a common theme in many Latino men’s lives. Visiones de Nuestra Patria. Sunday, April 1, 2012. Christian Syncretism in Island Literature. While reading both Bodega Dreams. And Dreaming in Cuban,. Friday, January 27, 2012. A day without a Mexican. A Day Without a Mexican. I found to be a very humorous film, but a very true film. As I watched the film I could not help but think of all the people I wanted to show this film too, including my parents. I would not necessarily call my family or friends racist, but defiantly misinformed just as I was. Many of the stereotypes discussed in the film are the same stereotypes that I believed in.
