Gouldiae's Blog: August 2014

http://gouldiaesblog.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

An occasional note that will mostly contain some observations of events that occur in the natural world here in Gippsland - Victoria - Australia. Sunday, August 31, 2014. I tootled down to Corinella on Friday to spend some very pleasant time with the Bass Coast Birdlife. Colony. Their outing was at the Corinella Cemetery Bushland Reserve, a small 6.6ha remnant bush block beside the Bass Highway. While I was snapping the orchids, a female Golden Whistler flew down onto some nearby low branches. White-nape...

An occasional note that will mostly contain some observations of events that occur in the natural world here in Gippsland - Victoria - Australia. Sunday, August 30, 2015. Today at Mt Cannibal. Consistent with Mrs Gouldiae’s observations - the blue flowering shrubs in the bush are among the first to appear in spring – some Common Hovea and Purple Coral-pea were catching the eye on the lower slopes. Common Hovea is a widespread straggling to erect shrub found in heathy woodlands of Vic, Tas, SA, NSW and Qld.

An occasional note that will mostly contain some observations of events that occur in the natural world here in Gippsland - Victoria - Australia. Sunday, June 28, 2015. This morning’s walk took me along a track on the edge of town that has some waste-land beside the ever busy Princes Highway. Periwinkle, Blackberry, Black Nightshade and other invasives were in profusion and up to waist high in places. Periwinkle - a garden escapee? Young male Superb Fairy-wren. Friday, June 26, 2015. An occasional note that will mostly contain some observations of events that occur in the natural world here in Gippsland - Victoria - Australia. Saturday, November 29, 2014. Success – Sort Of! I’ve been lusting after a half decent look and photograph of a Rufous Fantail for several weeks now. I’ve ticked a bird or two in Nangara Reserve at Jindivick a couple of times recently but haven’t had one sit still long enough for a picture. Thursday, November 27, 2014. Don't Turn Your Back On Me! I did manage so...

An occasional note that will mostly contain some observations of events that occur in the natural world here in Gippsland - Victoria - Australia. Sunday, March 22, 2015. The R J Chambers Flora and Fauna Reserve is located at Pakenham Upper, just south of Emerald, just east of Cardinia Reservoir and just north of another of my favourite locations – Officeworks at Pakenham! The reserve consists of several forest communities that contain a wide range of trees, shrubs, grasses and herbs. The females of this ...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: April 2015

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Monday, April 27, 2015. Even under the mangroves the reflections were nearly perfect. I stayed well out from the roost where I expected to find shorebirds and then sat sill on the kayak and let myself gradually drift in closer. When I do this the birds allow a much closer approach than if I paddle in with paddles flashing in the sunlight. Of course the Pied Oystercatchers were there and reflected in the still water. Several more photos of the Little Egrets made a great finish to...

Sloughed And Ready To Roll. Today, I came upon this Shingle-back lizard enjoying the sun. It's pretending it's not there, of course! I was really pleased to see it as the local population appears to be dropping. This one is only half-grown. Thursday, September 4, 2008. The Striated Pardalote is one of my favourites. These ...

Pearsondale Birder.: July 2015

http://pearsondale.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

My observations of the bird life in the Gippsland area. Saturday, 18 July 2015. Looking for a Fox. Last week of the school holidays my 9 YO grand daughter LuLu who is a permanent resident with my wife and I said she was bored; which is pretty normal for this generation. Said she wanted to see a fox, I said we could go and look for one but it would be luck if we say one. There was also a nice reflection on the lagoon so another photo was taken. Even though there was no fox she was happy to take some photos.

Last Monday the Heyfield Bird watchers hosted a day out with some members of Bird Life Australia East Gippsland Branch. Members from Bairnsdale and District. We had nineteen individuals for the day. Our first stop was Maffra Riverside Reserve, a very small area. At the end of our walk we had ticked off 28 species. The photo of the Swift Parrots is not that good as they were a long distance away. Lepidoptera Diary: May 2009

http://lepidopteradiary.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Butterflies, Moths plus other invertebrates found in my garden at Great Western, Victoria. Australia. Tuesday, 26 May 2009. Well, I think this moth is Oxycanus antipoda! Hepialids can be quite difficult to correctly identify without the beneift of years of experience and in some cases, a microscope! I was unable to be of much use to Denis. When he called for identification assistance recently, but I guess that is part and parcel of the mothing game! We are learning together. Click images to enlarge).

Monday, June 12, 2006. Ritual of the Gouldian is really something amazing. The male starts by curling his neck head down and sometimes moving it from side to side. He starts singing in front of the female, and then he jumps up and down on the branch. If all this works in his favor, he will get the rewards inside of a dark nest. The making of a good Gouldian nest. The Gouldians are not usually good of parents. With Gouldians does come with great rewards. Try always to choose the best seed you can buy&...
