In July 1957 the NSW Railways began to take delivery of 100 Alco World Series DL-500B locomotives. Built in 3 batches (4401 to 4460 {Mk1}, 4461 to 4480 {Mk2} and 4481 to 44100 {Mk3}). In their heydey, these locomotives operated every type of mainline passenger and freight service. 44 class locomotives are used on many of our mainline tours. 4464 entered service in January 1966 and was withdrawn in 1994. It is presently being restored and should return to service during 2008.

News and updates about the restoration of NSWGR locomotive 4464. Thursday, October 21, 2010. 4464 was put onto the load box this week to do the final tuning and rack settings on the engine. Our friends from Drivetrain were present to perform the testing along with our old mate Col Parry. 4464 was hooked up to a portable load bank and when run at full power was making 1800 horsepower. 4464 will soon be performing mainline trials. We expect to announce the first tour soon. Thursday, September 16, 2010.

4501 at Delec on its first day in service. Photographer Bob Winch. Built in 1962 by A.E. Goodwin Pty Ltd, 4501 is an Alco Model DL541 locomotive and was one of 40 built for NSWGR main line passenger and freight train haulage. This class of locomotive is renowned for its heavy haulage ability. An extensive restoration of 4501 has been recently completed and the locomotive repainted into its original livery. 4501 is owned by Goodwin Alco.
