Reflections. By Rebecca. Sharing my life and love with others. Sunday, March 16, 2014. Race for Inequality Graphs. This is an activity to help my kids to practice recognizing the graph of an inequality solution. I love "kill and drill" practice disguised as an activity; I love it even more if I can get them up and moving around the classroom. This short activity does both. Tape the graphs around the classroom with masking tape. Pass out two solution cards to each student. Short and sweet :). Be irrelevan...

Opposite of a Negative: Grades FAQ
http://joyceh1.blogspot.com/p/grades.html
Opposite of a Negative. Lesson plans, reflections, student work, and more. How tall is Mr. Joyce? This blog post is directed at a wide audience: my students, their parents, and teachers. To my students: I hope this provides a clear picture of how you can succeed in my class, as far as assessments are concerned. I realized from conferences that some students didn't truly understand the system 2/3 of the way into the year. To math teachers: I'd love any input on my system, suggestions, anything at all....

The Prime Factorisation of Me. Football scores problem solution. By Shaun Carter on. The other day I posted this problem that one of my students discovered. We played around with it for a while and came up with this solution. I don't know if this is the easiest or most elegant solution, but it's what I have. Quick recap, we're trying to solve…. The Math Hatter: We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals
http://cjsieling.blogspot.com/2015/02/were-going-on-square-hunt-simplifying.html
Friday, February 6, 2015. We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals. The class spent a week exploring the Pythagorean Theorem. After creating a need with the students to handle square roots, on Friay we went over how to simplify them. This topic has always been a bit dry and never quite landed with the students. I have always talked about trying to find perfect squares and use those to break down the number. So as the class entered today I played this video. We're going on a square hunt. My mini...

Reflections. By Rebecca. Sharing my life and love with others. Friday, June 19, 2015. Arthur Benjamin and Inspiring Math. There are many things that I find difficult about teaching, but two of them are planning for a substitute teacher and inspiring my students. 1) Planning lessons for a substitute is really hard for me! I stress about whether my directions are clear enough, if the students will have enough time or if there will be extra time, if the substitute will even read my plans, etc. 8220;The numb...

Kicking goals with trig | The Prime Factorisation of Me

The Prime Factorisation of Me. Kicking goals with trig. By Shaun Carter on. So I need to start this post with an admission: I got this activity from our textbooks. In my own defense, I really only took the initial idea from the book, but then made up the rest of the lesson myself. So the idea I "borrowed" today was about rugby league and using trigonometry to calculate the angles involved. In particular, trying to work out the optimal position to kick the ball from to make a conversion. I wanted my stude...

The Prime Factorisation of Me. Student Feedback (Year 7). By Shaun Carter on. Continuing on from my last post, here is the feedback I got from Year 7. Like last time, I used Start, Stop, Keep and Change, and I'll go through responses for each question, adding my own reflections as I go. I'll be honest, a lot of this feedback wasn't particularly…. Thoughts and ideas from a High School Maths teacher. June 25, 2016. I previously blogged about my discovery and creation of Challenge Grids. I experimented using them with a few classes but didn’t feel I was using them as effectively as I could. Moving to my new school a few weeks ago, I now teach mixed ability junior classes. My initial query was how can I have a starter task that all in the class can do which supports the lower ability but also challenges the more able? Follow me on Twitter.
