Life in chicago and elsewhere. Sunday, January 30, 2011. I've been signing daily and I'm certainly learning, though there's still room for improvement. The team from Managua is called the Bóer and they have exactly same logo as the Cleveland Indians. If anyone has ideas about the name I'd be very happy to hear them. The only Bóers I know about were Dutch people in South Africa. Anyway, the game was quite an experience. The game was close until the 8th inning when the. Sunday, November 09, 2008. But I don...

life in chicago and elsewhere: January 2008

http://www.nomadicmolly.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Life in chicago and elsewhere. Friday, January 04, 2008. Well for anyone not on facebook, here's a bit of what it's been like to be in Des Moines caucusing in the Iowa caucus:. Complete and utter chaos. Welcome to Iowa. That was how the meeting of my precinct closed. And the caucus most certainly was. Everyone (470 people! I can't believe that this crazy process has such an enormous effect on how American chooses a president. America. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Life in chicago and elsewhere. Wednesday, November 08, 2006. A New Yorker Abroad - votes and travels. First of all, adios Rummy and come on Virginia! Now a short update with less timely content. Last week I headed across the channel to Austria. Well okay, across the channel and a few countries. I spent a lovely week on some short hikes, exploring Munich, and at a Zellhof Camp reunion weekend. Pictures below. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A New Yorker Abroad - votes and travels. life in chicago and elsewhere: December 2006

http://www.nomadicmolly.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Life in chicago and elsewhere. Thursday, December 07, 2006. Thanksgiving in the land of Burns and Scott. Shopping for Thanksgiving dinner was quite an experience. Who knew how much the supplies for one, albeit very large, meal could cost? The cooking preparation began for me, and for the saintly Nita, who happens to live on my floor, on Wednesday night. After lots of grocery shopping we spent Wednesday evening peeling and chopping potatoes, stuffing walnuts into cherries (hooray for jello with bumps!

Life in chicago and elsewhere. Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Hill Walking and British Dental Care. Last weekend I ventured out of Edinburgh for the first time since my arrival here in Scotland. I went with the hill walking society to Torridon, in the northwestern Highlands. http:/ www.aboutbritain.com/maps/torridon-map.asp. Zoom out and you can see just how far northwestern! Here are a few things I discovered during the weekend:. 1) The Highlands are GORGEOUS! Beyond stunning. Look at this:. 6) On the way h...

life in chicago and elsewhere: Deep in the Heart of Texas

http://www.nomadicmolly.blogspot.com/2007/07/deep-in-heart-of-texas.html

Life in chicago and elsewhere. Sunday, July 01, 2007. Deep in the Heart of Texas. Well isn't air travel fun? After a pretty terrible arrival/check-in experience at Gatwick, I finally got to Houston (9 hours by the way, ouch! Then I ran to immigration, where I was greeted by an enormous line. Why is it that the US-citizen line in US airports is so often longer than the non-EU line in the EU? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Deep in the Heart of Texas. View my complete profile.

With An I: unintentional work haiku

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2010/11/unintentional-work-haiku.html

Monday, November 08, 2010. In an email to Kolz just now, I wrote the following:. Today is stinky. when do you think you'll be home? And then realized it was a very simplistic haiku. When do you think you'll be home? This pleased me, and made me remember how fun it was to be a part of my college friends' birthday haiku perpetual chain letter, though it has fallen off occasionally in recent years. And, anyway, there's only certain company that really makes that situation livable. New York, NY, United States.

With An I: stuck

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2010/12/stuck.html

Tuesday, December 07, 2010. I am without my headphones at the office today - thankfully, it has been quiet, and the work is coming along. But in my song-listening head, it is not quiet. In fact, it is full of "Life During Wartime" by the Talking Heads, which, of course, I cannot listen to do banish the Ohrwurm, or distract myself with something else. But if I whisper it into the reeds, in the blogging sense, perhaps I'll forget about it? Posted by Wabes @ 12/07/2010 05:39:00 PM. View my complete profile.

With An I: winter warmer

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2011/01/winter-warmer.html

Wednesday, January 26, 2011. But I have also innovated! 1/4 lemon, squeezed and left in mug. 1 3-4 inch sprig rosemary, crushed gently with flat of knife. 1 T honey, or to taste. Fill mug with very hot water. It is divine, just the nicest hint of something interesting and tasty, and I am not coughing! Just breathing the steam is lovely. I think I will try thyme in the next one, thinking of how nice it usually is with lemon. Posted by Wabes @ 1/26/2011 12:34:00 PM. New York, NY, United States.

With An I: Not contrary!

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2010/09/not-contrary.html

Saturday, September 04, 2010. I am not posting to be contrary, but only because I was talking with Lau. Just now about the eggplant I was cooking for dinner, and we tagged la Gadda's recent post. Evocative, simple, nice: "go away: eggplant"). Lau asked me what I do with it, and, well, this is what I do with it:. Let's call it "Wabes'-I-Swear-You-Should-At-Least-Try-It, Eggplant-Haters" eggplant. 4 good-sized japanese eggplants. 2 T tamari or regular soy sauce (I use low-sodium tamari). 2 T mirin rice wine.

With An I: various

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2010/12/various.html

Thursday, December 16, 2010. Today, it is cold, again - but not as bad as the folks have at home in Illinois (where winter is epic, ice-blasted, frozen-prairie, jesus. But we needed good apples, so I went out to the farmers' market anyway, and stopped by the dosa stand on the way back. I got a samosa bigger than my fist that was just perfect.*. And now, this is what I think:. 1) Someday I want to write a recipe/story/column where I get to use the phrase "A samosa, yes! It's like an Indian knish.". On wor...

With An I: August 2006

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 31, 2006. Speaking of home, I have two prevailing thoughts about it right now, or really just relevant anecdotes:. I have been thinking that, since leaving Dar, I’ve been in a slow process of re-integrating into American life slowly re-adding creature comforts and familiarity in going from Dar to Berlin to Oxford to London. Hot showers, climate control (yes), more green veggies and good beer (thank you again, Germany), and then backsliding a bit to no mixed water taps (bah, England!

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 28, 2007. Cakes from the pan, we say. Man, what is it right now with pancakes for dinner. Appearing in my life? It seems to have started with Betsy and I's on-the-fly choice of My Old Dutch for dinner in London, and now, clearly, the Minimalist himself has been influenced by our culinary choices. Or maybe it started on a high school road trip with Andi and my folks at a "Pannekooken" place in South Dakota. Who knows.it will not be the shape of tonight's dinner, that's for sure. Marching ...

With An I: July 2006

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 31, 2006. I went to church last Sunday. I had a full post prepared yesterday, but nearly everything in closed in Dar on Sunday. This puts my arrival, at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon, in a new perspective - everything seemed so empty and quiet, no restaurants, no people on the street. Dar is much quieter on Saturdays and Sundays, especially downtown. So, I did indeed go to church yesterday, to the Azania Front Lutheran Church. Posted by Wabes @ 7/31/2006 06:07:00 AM. With An I

http://world-with-an-i.blogspot.com/2010/11/application-season-has-pretty-much.html

Sunday, November 07, 2010. Application season has pretty much taken me out of the running for writing about anything else, although many nice things have been afoot otherwise. Today I walked home past the streams of marathoners, and yelled out names as people went past me. I got a few smiles, but it was at mile 23, so people mostly just looked zonked. Lately I have been missing home a bit, and my officemate, a fellow southern Illinoisan, pointed me to these landscape photographs. View my complete profile.

Thursday, May 20, 2010. Putting One foot in Front of the Other. When Luke is in the hospital and then the preceding week and a half or so after he is discharged I never feel quite in control of life. It's rather irritating but I have learned that I can just float along as the waves crash. Sometimes it's rough, like today, but I have learned that in my weakness, physically and spiritually, I can make it when I call on Christ for strength. Saturday, May 15, 2010. Tonight he is spending the night with Daddy...
