What am I preoccupied with NOW? Our absolute favorite restaurant in Tampa is the Columbia Restaurant. Last year with visiting friends, I stumbled on a bayfront bar in a marina in Englewood called Zeke’s. Strong drinks and fried seafood, pretty much as expected, but they served a smoked fish dip that blew my skirt up! What am I preoccupied with NOW? I don’t like fresh raw tomatoes. I love them cooked, sauced, dried, in salsa (even fairly fresh), but I don’t like them in salads or on sandwiches. My dear friend Sue grows these gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, and I’ll eat a tiny bite or two while suppressing my gag reflex, but that’s it. I use bottled lime juice with abandon. Fast forward to this past Sunday, when an innocent lunch of leftover Popeye’s led to 6 hours of debilitating abdominal pain, again followed by a relief-inducing vomit. What am I preoccupied with NOW? There are a number of items I try to keep around so when I get an inspiration, I don’t have to race off to the grocer! India Special Extra Bold Peppercorns and a Unicorn. Fats: Unsalted butter, extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, baking spray, bacon fat (in fridge). Aromatics: Shallots, garlic, onions, celery (pre-chopped in freezer), baby carrots, tri-colored peppers (freezer). 2% milk, eggs, plain yogurt. Stock (low-sodium canned chicken; various homemade in freezer).

What am I preoccupied with NOW? And Winter Is Here. And so begins my lament … I hate winter. Yes, hate is a strong word. But I am so over winter. I’m tired of the freezing pipes battle. I’m tired of the freezing furnace sump pump battle. I’m tired of throwing treats out the back door because otherwise the dog won’t go out to do his business. I’m tired of being cold, all the time. The high point of my morning commute? When the seat heater kicks in. The one bright spot until April I guess. January 13, 2015.
