The Pilgrim on the Shore. Dear pink genital, you alone oblige me. Meanwhile no one writes. This hand is tired,. I tell the sky. Where is the fleet, where. I can hardly lift my head. To see the small, sand-colored shapes. Waving from their buggies like maggots. It's a picture from childhood,. That faraway, that sweet. Dear old friend, all this time it was you. Calling my name in strange places. Dear physic, I'm sicker than you are strong. Bring word to your brothers and sisters:. The Nihilist Takes a Bow.

In Lenox Hill Hospital, after surgery, my mother said the sirens sounded. Like the elephants of Mihiragula when his men drove them off cliffs. In the Pir Panjal Range.). The Hun so loved the cry, one falling elephant's,. He wished to hear it again. At dawn, my mother. Heard, in her hospital-dream of elephants,. Sirens wail through Manhattan like elephants. Forced off Pir Panjal's rock cliffs in Kashmir:. The soldiers, so ruled, had rushed the elephant,. The greatest of all footprints is the elephant's,.

It’s like waking up with someone else’s. The hills shoring themselves against the dusk,. A thin ice hinging on the lake’s edge. I can almost remember. The months we lay. Huddled up together in the womb,. Where we incubated,. Four pounds each;. I can still almost feel. Strength, as he lifted us,. One in each hand,. And call back the smell. On the wind through our window,. Crushed on our street…. I can see us. On Easter, acting. Pinned to our lapels, Vitalis. Slicked on our hair,. Merged at the waist, each.

Ten Things About Love. 1 The first thing I learned to love about the mountains was the sharpness of cold water on my tongue. I loved that cutting burn immediately - a painful gulp that felt like truth - and I knew that I could not live without something that was so honest inside my chest. This is how I first learned to love the mountains. I've never cared about summits. It's my downfall as a professional mountain guide: it doesn't matter whether I stand on the pointy part of the mountain. I am mo...I was...

My Place in the Universe. I think I am here. To stare carefully at maps,. Then get lost at least fifty times a year. I think I am here. Made aware of the loudness. Of a ticking clock,. Also to witness, in unexpected places,. To hear a lady in heels. Walking assertively down a hall. The universe and I,. We are both expanding our knowledge. Of what's just beyond us. Really not separate after all,. Me surely not a subset. Me, the chairs, all. The couches, every soda can,. Every book and eyelash,. And raptur...

Here the serpent-son,. Apollo’s offspring, came to land, put on. His heavenly form again, and to the people. Brought health and end of mourning. The old god. Came to our shrines from foreign lands, but Caesar. Is god in his own city. Ooh, the vision comes and goes, and again it appears. The poet was right. There is something out there mounting up. Beneath the surface…This morning the lake is invisible. We’ve come to the harbor on my twenty-sixth birthday. By this fog in my father’s hometown. There, in th...

Poem of the Week. Musee des Beau Arts — W. H. Auden. August 3, 2008 by Meghan. Bruegel’s “ Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. 8221; has been my favorite painting ever since i discovered it about 3 years ago. This will give you some idea of just how excited i am about the fact that im going to see the painting itself in Brussels in less than a week. In honor of this momentous occasion, I’ve decided to post here a poem written about the painting by a British poet, W. H. Auden. Musee de Beaux Arts. Had some...

Poem of Today – A New Poem from Simon J. Halliday Every Day!

A New Poem from Simon J. Halliday Every Day! May 13, 2014. Light and life in flowing streams. Let’s seek them out, beyond the schemes. For simple is the way of truth. It doesn’t need a super-sleuth. The world a stage? And everything’s just passing through. The hopes and fears of each mind. Will come and go whilst most are blind. And reading may not bring the way. So much is thought, but what’s to say? The depth of human-kind is rare. Don’t doubt you’ll find the ones who care. And once again, another dawn.

I’VE ALWAYS LIKED RHYME,. MOST OFTEN WHEN IT DISAPPEARS. Almost like a game that the writer plays to tell a tale, share a feeling, get a point across in rhyme without the rhyme dictating the cadence or the emphasis placed on the words. Calling these pieces poems may be a bit inaccurate as well, since they’re not poetry in the sense of most poems I’ve read pictures with words. These are more rhymed essays, soliloquies, in which I often learn what I think by setting it down. But employing pictures with the...
