Friday, October 31, 2014. What Halloween Can Teach Us About Writing. Once again, it's that time of year. Leaves changing to orange from green. Scary movies on syndication rotation. And the dreaded five (OK, ten) pounds gained between now and New Year's. So, what can Halloween actually teach us about writing? Read on, if you dare. muahahaha. Step into Someone Else's Shoes. The best part of Halloween (aside from eating all the dark chocolate I want with no judgement? What does your character look like?

The Last Few Months — Elsewise Strategic

http://elsewisestrategic.com/2011/02/the-last-few-months

How could information shape your world? The Last Few Months. February 18, 2011. I’ve been busy finalizing a couple projects for release, as well as working on a few that won’t come out for another month or two, and I’ve really let the blogging go. Here’s a quick roundup of a few news items since my last post in September:. I released PDX Trees. In October, and it won the Most Appealing App award in Portland’s Civic Apps Challenge. I just posted a progress report. Republished on her own site. Take a look&...

The Benefits of Having Your Head in the Clouds — Elsewise Media

http://www.elsewisemedia.com/2009/06/the-benefits-of-having-your-head-in-the-clouds

Exploring the Elements of A Creative Life. The Benefits of Having Your Head in the Clouds. June 3, 2009. For at least half a day earlier this week, a story about clouds. Was the most shared story on the BBC News website:. Clouds: More popular than Reagan and Bee Thieves. Clouds, something most humans see all the time, were ranked above something quite rare: a jet falling out of the sky over the Atlantic. Of course, the clouds that were eliciting such excitement were not just any clouds:. They are dynamic...

Peculiarity over Productivity — Elsewise Media

http://www.elsewisemedia.com/2009/05/peculiarity-over-productivity

Exploring the Elements of A Creative Life. May 1, 2009. In Life Cycle of Ideas. If inefficiency is culture, as I recently asserted. What is the effect of a nationwide preoccupation with efficiency? Isn’t that just another kind of culture? When I use the word culture, I’m describing what I see as an ideal culture: a diverse and evolving conversation of ideas. The Maize is All The Same. As Michael Pollan put it in a 2002 article. Because it’s the cheapest thing you can feed any animal, thanks to fede...

The Next Act — Elsewise Media

http://www.elsewisemedia.com/2009/02/the-next-act

Exploring the Elements of A Creative Life. February 19, 2009. Life Cycle of Ideas. Last weekend, I watched a video of Elizabeth Gilbert’s presentation at this month’s TED conference. The title seemed promising: “ A different way to think about creative genius. Her speech began with a common reaction to the success of her book “Eat Pray Love”:. 8220;Everywhere I go now people treat me like I’m doomed.”. 8221; She seems to have let that atmosphere of doom permeate her thinking:. Where to begin…. I agree: i...

http://elsewisestrategic.com/2011/03/location-adjustments

How could information shape your world? Sending Location Adjustments from iOS to CouchDB. March 1, 2011. I’ve been a fan of Portland’s Public Art collection since I first visited the city twelve years ago. Over the last few months, I’ve been working with the Mayor’s office. And the Regional Arts and Culture Council. To build a map-based iOS app that showcases this art and presents it to a wider audience. And now, it’s here: Public Art PDX. Is available for download from the App Store. With over 400 works...

Quotes Related to Creativity — Elsewise Media

Exploring the Elements of A Creative Life. From the category archives:. Words on a Screen. January 18, 2010. Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I set aside some time to read through one of his speeches. Yes, read. Not listen or watch, but read. True, Dr. King was more of a speechmaker than a pamphleteer. The audio and video recordings of his speeches are indeed powerful. The non-verbal elements that inspire and attract us to a well-delivered speech can distract us from the actual message. 8220;, f...

A Retrospective — Elsewise Media

http://www.elsewisemedia.com/2009/12/a-retrospective

Exploring the Elements of A Creative Life. December 3, 2009. Life Cycle of Ideas. Is it too early? It’s barely been a year and a half. I am currently, shall we say, gathering data in Terra incognita. Rather than rush to publish a few posts that aren’t quite ready, I thought I’d take the chance to highlight a few from the past seventeen months or so. Writing a blog feels a lot like practicing a musical instrument with the door open. 8221; Or “He’s. In May, I wrote about traveling with. December 4, 2009 at...

About Gold Arts Award. Imi's Gold Arts Award Blog. My journey to the Gold Arts Award. August 9, 2015. Today my searching brought me to the Young Poets Network. Their website is a really good source for writing challenges and opportunities. You can also have your work published on their new writing. Page I like how they have dedicated a page to opportunities for young poets- such as competitions and other online resources. They also have a fantastic glossary of poetry terminology. And their youtube channel.

Boulder C.O.P.A. Contemporary Oral Poetry Archive. Monday, December 22, 2008. The Laughing Goat Closes for Winter Solstice. The sign on the door to the Laughing Goat says the café is closed for the winter solstice. This little detail gives a clue to the culture of the cafe. Here, the pagan holiday is celebrated, not Christmas. The closure suggests the café's client base of hippies are in tune with cosmic, celestial events. Monday, December 22, 2008. Poetry Boxes

Words in the fold. Friday, December 26, 2008. What's in the box? Poetry Boxes are a hybrid of origami and poetry that I invented in 2001. They're based on an 18th-century Japanese paper-art form called. Or "surprise box." Each box is made of six individual panels pre-printed with text that, when assembled, form a complete poem. The title is printed on the top; the poem is read by turning the box clockwise. It took me literally months to work out the template. What Goes On Inside a Box? A quiet, closet.
