Saturday, October 22, 2011. COML BLOG, Part 4 — Farewell post. When the house was up, I wanted to help lay the tiles in the bathroom. I did! I helped mix the paint and paint the walls. I also helped with the grounds, digging holes so the betelnut palm tree “saplings” could be planted in a row in front of the house. Links to this post. Saturday, October 15, 2011. COML BLOG, Part 3 — Writing as technology. What does Walter Ong mean when he says that “writing is a technology”? I think a major point being ig...

Nocturnal Islander: March 2012

Saturday, March 31, 2012. 8220;SEVERE WEATHER ALERT”. 8220;TORNADO WARNING”. I don’t know about anyone else, but seeing these words cut across the TV screen or on my computer’s screen are enough to get me into action. I check the weather maps, and I mentally prepare what I need to grab — important documents, wallet, extra clothes, canned goods, bottled water. We knew that the high-risk areas were more than 50 miles away, and we also knew that tornado shelters were only a minute away from us. Because ...

Nocturnal Islander: January 2014

Wednesday, January 8, 2014. An email with the subject "Rediscovering your greens" got me thinking about my experience with vegetables and fruits. My veggie and fruit consumption is worlds away from what it was like in my childhood. My favorite vegetable were the leaves of the kamunggay. Visayan) or malunggay (. Or moringa, tree. My mom would send us kids out to cut long fronds of malunggay. Star fruit) and fruits that I know only as soursop, iba. My college years in Spokane, WA, opened my eyes to the goo...

Nocturnal Islander: June 2013
http://nocturnalislander.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 3, 2013. If you want to eat it, you've got to learn to make it. Living on my own has forced me to be braver in the kitchen. I like to cook, but I'm not great at it. I always mess up a dish, usually by over-salting it or (cringe! So what would anyone desperate to taste something from past experience do? Well, try to make it! After craving it for months, I finally scoured several Web sites and compared recipes, finally trying to make it on my own. It turned out crunchy (maybe a bit burnt) ...

Monday, May 28, 2012. Where'd you get Yours (Lemon Powder)? Some things are hard to come by . but that doesn't always justify raising the cost of products to four, five times a "regular" retail price. My last can. :(. This past weekend, I used up what was left of the Yours Lemon Powder to make chicken kelaguen. Today, a Memorial Day holiday, I decided to look up sites to see if there were more outlets selling that particular lemon powder. I zeroed in on the price: $27.99 per can. Links to this post.

Nocturnal Islander: July 2011

Sunday, July 3, 2011. In search of Indian food. Last night I had planned to drive over there, but when I got home from work, my sister had already cooked pasta with two types of sauces. I mixed both the tomato sauce and the shrimp “sauce” and then added dried hot pepper flakes. That was enough to drive away thoughts of Indian food for the night. However, today I was on my own. My sister’s family was going to be in Lawrence for the whole day, and so I could eat as I please. Finally I arrived at Zona Rosa ...

Nocturnal Islander: Comment on public education
http://nocturnalislander.blogspot.com/2014/02/comment-on-public-education.html
Friday, February 7, 2014. Comment on public education. The responses: "Friends." "School." "Beach.". I stared at the computer screen in disbelief. Could high school students be that clueless? Why yes, they could be, and are, often ignorant of what many would hold to be common knowledge. Ve = could've NOT could of. Ve = should've NOT should of. Ve = would've NOT would of. My questions to school professionals everywhere: What are you teaching in school? What aren't you teaching? View my complete profile.

Saturday, November 2, 2013. Asparagus biscuits. Yes, I just used two words that seemingly don't go together. But they exist! This is a snack that many Guamanians love to eat. I showed a childhood friend over Skype the bag that I received from a houseguest, and she was envious. She even pointed out that I was eating it in front of her! Well, I did open the bag to show what each "biscuit" looked like to her German husband. It was open already, so I thought that I may as well indulge. :). Links to this post.

Nocturnal Islander: December 2012
http://nocturnalislander.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 20, 2012. Warning: This is a rant). All the talk about Doomsday and the Mayan Apocalypse, as well as the news about the blizzard that dumped snow in the Midwest, have gotten people online talking about being prepared. Before the storm made landfall and electricity was cut, I already prepared a meal with enough leftovers. Luckily, I finished cooking about 10 minutes before my power went out. I also had hot water in a thermos that would keep the water warm until the next day. I'm an isla...
