http://oca-d1-drawing.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
A blog describing my learning journey on the OCA Drawing 1 course. P2 Project Detailed Observation - Check and Log. I seem to have been at this stage for ages. I have been. It's taken me a long time to get through this section because I decided that to improve my skills, I would benefit from redoing the assignment 1 exercises and also that my learning log needed jazzing up. My learning strategy is to alternate new assignment 2 exercises with old assignment 1 exercises. This seems to be working. Look at t...

Make notes in your learning log on the pros and cons of each medium. I have found pencil to be t most expressive. You can use pressure or density of lines / hatching / shading to express different textures and tones. Pros and Cons of Watercolour: I could not make my watercolour pencils work. I need to do mo...

Sue OCA Painting 1. Saturday, 20 April 2013. Visit to the Mall Galleries. Royal Institute of Painters of Watercolours. This year I managed to get to the RI watercolourist's exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. What an absolute treat. I splashed out and bought a programme and wrote some comments alongside the exhibits; a useful exercise. Kevin Hughes had used a technique I had not seen before; at a guess it looked like the paint was sprayed on to produce restful pastoral scenes. The exhibition also...

Sue OCA Painting 1. Thursday, 1 August 2013. Follow up from Assignment 1. Look at the tree paintings of Elizabeth Magill. She combines an interesting range of techniques to evoke a slightly otherworldly sense of landscape. It is her use of transparent glazes beneath twisted tree forms that you might find interesting. You will find similar qualities in some of the work of Peter Doig. Also look at the still life paintings of Morandi,. Elizabeth Magill - Betula Pendula. Elizabeth Magill - purple. My favouri...

Sue OCA Painting 1 : Part 5: Personal Development

Sue OCA Painting 1. Saturday, 28 February 2015. Part 5: Personal Development. Different ways of applying paint. Apples boldbrudh strokes 1. This is just the start of an exercise but with thin paint and a short bristled brush the brushstrokes can be seen. This gives a different feel to the use of thick paint which provides an impasto brushstroke. Apples bold brush strokes 2. Apples - gold powder, tippex and acrylic. Brown card with a green emulsion. The idea was to scratch through the emulsion, but be...

Sue OCA Painting 1. Saturday, 21 September 2013. Exercise 9: Simple perspective in interior studies. Focus on creating an illusion of space. Drawing interior spaces is a good way to understand perspective. Try to work with a degree of accuracy and measure proportions with care. I lightly painted the outlines of important shapes, aiming to be accurate with proportions. I also focused on the lines and dealt with tone in a very basic way, just taking the major tonal variations. Looking again at the picture,...

Sue OCA Painting 1. Monday, 17 June 2013. Working on different coloured grounds. Tonal sketch 1 (A4 cartridge – charcoal). Tonal sketch 2 (A4 cartridge – charcoal). The strong sunlight was radiating through the window. The contrasts of light against the dark background were exploited. This back/side lighting creates a thin sliver of light around the objects – a halo effect. This second sketch offers a more interesting composition, contributed by the long cast shadows. How quickly do I need to work? I use...
