Buzz And Flutter: A New Zealand Gem
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2016/12/a-new-zealand-gem.html
Saturday, 31 December 2016. A New Zealand Gem. Nly hours now remain of. Old man winter is serving up an all day snow storm driven by a cold east wind. My thoughts turn to hot popcorn and a good movie. On Netflix, I did find a gem - a 2016 New Zealand film called, Hunt For The Wilderpeople. The stunningly rugged scenery of New Zealand's wilderness was reward enough, but the characters were all quirky and likeable. The story is based on the book, Wild Pork and Watercress. 31 December 2016 at 17:31. Thanks ...

Buzz And Flutter: July 2016
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, 10 July 2016. I have quite a soft spot for skunks. Their black and white coat is elegant haute couture. They help keep rodent populations in check and you have to admire their natural ability to use 'bear spray' if threatened. Skunks and I have shared many walkabouts and I must say, they have been nothing but polite to me. My cat, Ellie Mae, prefers them to other cats. Jimmy skunk takes an early mor ning dri nk. From my backyard tub. He seems to check for edibles that might live around the water.

TrogTrogBee: Welcome
http://trogtrogbee.blogspot.com/2017/01/welcome.html
Sunday, 1 January 2017. Welcome to my new blog. I have started it so I can write and post occasionally about beekeeping, and share my photos. My first and main blog, TrogTrogBlog. Then some more text, then another photo. Then another photo, and so on. It is also not possible (as far as I can work out) to prepare, save and schedule posts in the way I can with my blogs. But some bees were also foraging on nearby mahonia. And a few were bringing in pollen, presumably from the mahonia. Nice, now my bees have...

TrogTrogBee: The slatted rack
http://trogtrogbee.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-slatted-rack.html
Sunday, 8 January 2017. Here's piece of kit I made for the first time last spring. It is a slatted rack and acts as a spacer below the brood box and above the floor. I first read about slatted racks on Rusty Burlew's blog. On Honey Bee Suite (https:/ honeybeesuite.com/blog/). Slatted rac. Ks are in common use in the United States and are commercially available for 8, 9, and 10 frame Langstroth hives (which have top bee space). The advantages of a slatted rack are:. It moves the brood nest a bit farther f...

Buzz And Flutter: First Snow
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2016/10/first-snow.html
Saturday, 29 October 2016. Yesterday we received our first snow fall of the season. I enjoyed the novelty but am still hoping for warmer weather that is also dry enough to finish an eaves trough project. I need a dry plus 10 degrees C for the caulking to stick. That rules out the next few days. Despite all odds, my three-legged red squirrel has survived and is gathering wild foods with determination. It only occasionally visits my feeders. I suspect it is nervous of the bluejays. 29 October 2016 at 13:38.

Buzz And Flutter: June 2016
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, 18 June 2016. I'm continuing to monitor my honey bees with the sugar shake mite count. So far, I have found zero mites. July and August is the time when mites reach their highest levels, concurrent with the peak volume of honey bee brood cells that varroa mites reproduce in. I'll contin u e. Regular mite sampling checks until the hives are wrapped for the winter. Ing for the source, then gave up and returned to the flowers. My honey bees are making good use of the two additional entrances.

Buzz And Flutter: April 2016
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
Friday, 22 April 2016. Many years ago, I constructed two nest boxes suitable for Screech-owls. Except for this past winter, the owls have been using the boxes but only for winter daytime roosting and for storing food items, never for brooding. Instead, starlings and squirrels have used these oversized bird houses for nesting. Lately, a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches have decided that one of the boxes suit s. Them well e nough to move. The female will lay from three to ten eggs. One brood per year.

Chesterfield and District Bee Keeping Association. Education - News and Reports. WHERE HAVE ALL THE DEAD BEES GONE? OR WHAT'S NOT BUZZING. Where have all the dead ones gone? We may see a few dead bees on the landing board of the hive, however if you look again after a few minutes they could have disappeared! Often when we see them they are in the process of being dragged away from the hive as part of the general tidying up work being conducted. How many dead bees are there? I didn’t think so! Buzz And Flutter: January 2017
http://buzzandflutter.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 23 January 2017. In my previous post, I pointed an accusatory finger at a coyote as the chief suspect in the sudden disappearance of feral tom cat, Ginger Tom. I was wrong. My sincere apologies to the coyote, to. His family and to his friends for any embarrassment I may have caused. When I returned from a grocery run this morning, what did I behold? Sitting on my deck was the missing. I've seen this orange tabby in the neighbourhood for quite a few years. Sometimes he would be. Ing patiently for a.
