TrogTrogPhoto: August 2014

http://www.trogtrogphoto.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 29 August 2014. Friday, 22 August 2014. The pedestrian walkway on Stephenson's High Level Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead. Sunday, 17 August 2014. Learning to see in the dark. Just back from a wonderful all night photoshoot in London with Doug Chinnery. Ably assisted by Terry Gibbins, who also drove us between locations in his black cab. It was surprisingly easy to stay awake and the time flew by. The programme even included burger and chips at 3am! All in all a great experience.

TrogTrogBee: Welcome

http://trogtrogbee.blogspot.com/2017/01/welcome.html

Sunday, 1 January 2017. Welcome to my new blog. I have started it so I can write and post occasionally about beekeeping, and share my photos. My first and main blog, TrogTrogBlog. Then some more text, then another photo. Then another photo, and so on. It is also not possible (as far as I can work out) to prepare, save and schedule posts in the way I can with my blogs. But some bees were also foraging on nearby mahonia. And a few were bringing in pollen, presumably from the mahonia. Nice, now my bees have...

TrogTrogBee: January 2017

http://trogtrogbee.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 22 January 2017. Sir Christopher Wren's beehive. Sir Christopher Wren was a remarkable man. Today he is best remembered as England's greatest architect but he didn't turn his hand to architecture until around the age of 30. Prior to that he was a Fellow of All Souls College in Oxford, Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, London, and Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford. His research interests encompassed mathematics, optics, astronomy,. Physiology, mechanics, microscopy, surveying,.

TrogTrogBee: The slatted rack

http://trogtrogbee.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-slatted-rack.html

Sunday, 8 January 2017. Here's piece of kit I made for the first time last spring. It is a slatted rack and acts as a spacer below the brood box and above the floor. I first read about slatted racks on Rusty Burlew's blog. On Honey Bee Suite (https:/ honeybeesuite.com/blog/). Slatted rac. Ks are in common use in the United States and are commercially available for 8, 9, and 10 frame Langstroth hives (which have top bee space). The advantages of a slatted rack are:. It moves the brood nest a bit farther f...

TrogTrogBlog: The empress and the commoner

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-empress-and-commoner.html

Sunday, 16 August 2015. The empress and the commoner. This male common blue damselfly clearly has ideas above his station but the female emperor knew he wasn't her class. 17 August 2015 at 21:37. New issue of Bee stamps Tuesday 18th August if you were not aware. 17 August 2015 at 22:39. Thanks Peter. Im pleased to see that they are all native wild bees but they are all rare - I havent seen any of them! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Some of my other photos on Flickr. TrogTrogBlog: January 2015

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 January 2015. Bird of the week - Bittern. I reckon to see at least one of the bitterns on most winter visits to the Pearce hide in Gosforth Park. Often it is a brief view as the bird flies from one reed bed to another but sometimes it comes out into the sunshine for a few moments. It pays to look closely at the reeds as the camouflage is amazingly effective. Labels: Bird of the week. Wednesday, 28 January 2015. The Very Hungry Hedgehog. So what do hedgehogs like to eat? A couple of weeks ago.

TrogTrogBlog: Third brood

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/third-brood.html

Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Most of the tree sparrows had had enough after one or two broods but this hardy pair are still feeding their third. Sometimes they bring in flies and beetles. At other times the food is seeds and suet from a feeder about 10m away. From the look of the chicks they'll probably fly before the end of the week. The parents often queue up with food. Thursday, 30 July 2015. Field grasshoppers seen on the Spetchells at Prudhoe. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. It was always going to be a tricky shot. The young fox was on the move on the other side of the hedge. This was the best I could manage. A pity as it was nearly a good photo. Monday, 27 July 2015. Black and white poppy pollen. It has been fascinating to watch the bees collect pollen from the poppies in the garden. Perennial poppies,. Have black pollen while annual poppies,. Produce almost white pollen.

TrogTrogBlog: Summer greenfinches

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/summer-greenfinches.html

Saturday, 1 August 2015. It is interesting that the finches look very smart at this time of year while the great tits and blue tits are really scruffy with moulting. Here are male, female and juvenile greenfinches this week. 1 August 2015 at 22:51. The greenfinches seem to me to stand out as the smart ones at this time of year! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). TrogTrogBlog: Slipper Tarn

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/slipper-tarn.html

Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Slipper Tarn is a pond in the middle of the woods in the National Trust Cragside estate. It is a good place for a visit on a windy day as it is so well sheltered by the trees. The black darters don't do much darting but spend much of their time resting beside the pond edge. This couple spent more than 15 minutes eyeing each other up but nothing came of it while I was watching. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Some of my other photos on Flickr. TrogTrogBlog: May 2015

https://trogtrogblog.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 31 May 2015. Nest box camera update 9 - Getting ready for departure. It is two weeks since the four chicks hatched and they are growing fast. They have had their eyes open for several days and t. Heir calls get louder each day. In the last couple of days they have developed a two-tone grey and yellow pattern to their feathers. (Some pictures are B&W because the camera reverts to infrared if the light level is low.). The parents have been working non-stop bringing in a supply of caterpillars.

Sunday, 15 January 2017. I had a lot of practice catching swarms last summer. As you can see below the problem is that my bees don't seem to realise that they are supposed to hang in a neat cluster from a branch, waiting for me to drop them into a box. One thing I have learnt from watching him is always. To have a queen clip immediately at hand, ready to catch the queen if she is seen. You can watch this recent upload. Thursday, April 3, 2014. Update: Arduino Camera Dolly. This summer I finished the second iteration of my programmable camera dolly. Everything worked relatively predictably and from the process I gained a deeper understanding of what sort of programming, design, and manufacturing processes work for a reasonably small project such as this. The following test was filmed on my roof. This next video shows the machining of the contact plate on a Haas Mini Mill. Labels: Update: Arduino Camera Dolly. The zip fi...
